BOYNE, Mich. – Head Athletic Trainer Marloes Blokdijk of Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University athletics was named 2018-19 WHAC Athletic Trainer of the Year on Tuesday during the WHAC Conference at Boyne Mountain in Boyne, Mich.
Blokdijk began working as the head athletic trainer at Lawrence Tech in 2011 when the Blue Devils resumed varsity athletics. She has helped develop and create an athletic training department from scratch. Over the next eight years, Blokdijk has brought on four additional athletic trainers, a strength and conditioning coach, and redesigned our training facility to meet the needs of our student-athletes.
WHAT HER COLLEAGUES ARE SAYING
Lawrence Tech Athletic Director, Scott Trudeau said:
"Marloes has built our Athletic Training Department since we started athletics in 2011 with five teams. We now have five AT's and 26 teams and Marloes has been the pioneer in the department setting our student-athletes up for success. She handles countless insurance claims on top of the normal rehab and treatment of our student athletes. She helped design and expand our Athletic Training room to accommodate the needs of our student-athletes. She works endless hours all for our student athletes. She has been on many interview panels and works hand in hand with our Strength and Conditioning coach so we can prevent more traffic in the training room. She is the most dedicated athletic trainer I have seen. She is loyal to both Henry Ford Health Systems and to Lawrence Tech. She is a very humble athletic trainer always looking for ways to improve and learn from all our trainers, even if it is their first year on the job. She lays the foundation of our rules/regulations in the training room and treats it as her own space. Our athletic training department strives thanks to Marloes's dedication and vision of the department."
Lawrence Tech Men's Soccer Coach Will Dyer said:
"Marloes and I have worked together since LTU began varsity athletics. She is dedicated to her student-athletes on and off the field. She is direct, sincere and has the respect of everyone on our athletic staff because she puts our student-athletes care above everything else."
Lawrence Tech Women's Lacrosse Coach Mary Ann Meltzer said:
"Marloes is so deserving of this award. She has made an incredible impact on all her student-athletes! She takes the time to really get to know each one. I am so fortunate to not only call her a colleague but a friend."
Lawrence Tech Men's Basketball Coach Josh Pickens said:
"The best ability is availability and Marloes is always available for our student-athletes. She puts in long hours, early mornings, and does so for the benefit of our players. She is a dedicated athletic trainer that puts our students first."
