UTICA, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team defeated Trinity International (Ill.) University 12-3 on Friday night in Utica, Mich. It opened a three-game series with the Trojans who finished 4-43 in 2017-18. .
The Blue Devils (5-0) scored three runs in the second inning to start the game up 3-0 as Alek Wietrzykowski (SO/Toledo, Ohio) got the start on the mound. Wietrzykowski went 3.1 innings with five strikeouts and four walks, allowing three runs - one earned - on four hits. He got himself into trouble in the third inning as he gave up a leadoff walk, but struck out the next two batters. The following hitter reached on a single to put runners on first and second with two outs.
Wietrzykowski struckout the next hitter, but he reached on a third strike, wild pitch to load the bases and walked the next batter to score Loucheim and cut the LTU lead to 3-1. Wietrzykowski got the next hitter to hit a ground ball to second base, but an error caused two runs to score and tie the game at 3-3.
Lawrence Tech responded in the bottom of the third as Jackson Walkowiak (SO/Grosse Pointe, MI) reached base with a double, stole third, and scored on a wild pitch to give the Blue Devils a 4-3 lead. Lawrence Tech added four more runs in the fourth inning as Max Cadman (JR/Hartland, Mich.)'s single to right center scored Logan Grizzell(JR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Robinette to make it 6-3. Sean Fannon (JR/Grosse Pointe, Mich.) made it 8-3 on a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Cadman and Sean Marshall(FR/Royal Oak, Mich.).
Matt Blunk (JR/Ann Arbor, Mich.) came in for Wietrzykowski during the fourth inning and closed down the Trojans with nine strikeouts over 3.2 innings pitched, allowing no walks, no hits, or runs. Wietrzykowski earned the the no-desicion while Blunk got the win.
Lawrence Tech added two runs in the each of the last two innings to make it a 12-3 game and earn their fifth win of the season. Robinette went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI. Walkowiak went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and three stolen bases. Cadman ended the game with four RBIs, going 2-for-3 from the plate with 13 putouts.
Lawrence Tech is back on the field Saturday, September 29 when they wrap up the three-game series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. in Utica.
