AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team wrapped up their spring trip with a split on Friday, March 15 against Aquinas (Mich.) College, falling 11-7 in the first game and taking game two 13-0.
Lawrence Tech (16-7) played on Thursday, March 14, falling to St. Ambrose 9-0. The Bees collected 17 hits in the win while the Blue Devils managed five hits.
In the opening game on Friday, Aquinas scored 11 runs off 12 hits in a seven inning contest. The Saints got things going early with a pair of run in the top of the first with the Blue Devils cutting their lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning. Aquinas added two more runs in the top of the second, but Lawrence Tech responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 4-4 off an RBI double from Jared Roth.
Aquinas took charge of the game in the fifth when they scored five runs to take a 10-4 lead. The Blue Devils battled to make it 10-6, but it was not enough as the Saints held off the Blue Devils for an 11-7 win. Matt Baker took the loss for Lawrence Tech allowing four runs on one hit while striking out two. Roth and Logan Barker each finished with a pair of hits each.
In game two, the Blue Devils were led by Jay Gallant who pitched an absolute gem, giving up no runs on four hits with eight strikeouts to earn the win. The pitching duel went for four innings, as neither team was able to get on the board until the fifth inning. The Blue Devils scored three runs in the fifth, two in the sixth, and eight in the seventh to take the game 13-0.
The Blue Devils now head north to take on University of Toledo (Ohio) on Wednesday, March 20 in Toledo, Ohio. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m.
