Blue Devils Beat Lincoln (Ill.) 11-7 and (RV) Warner 12-6 to move to 14-5 on the Season

LAKE WALES, Fla. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team played a pair of games on Tuesday, March 12 against Lincoln (Ill.) College and (RV) Warner (Fla.) University. The Blue Devils defeated Lincoln 11-7 in Winter Haven, Fla. In the opening game of the day and travelled to Lake Wales, Fla., for a 12-6 win at Warner.

Lawrence Tech (14-5, 0-0) opened the day in Winter Haven with Lincoln taking the early 4-0 lead, but the Blue Devils responded in the bottom of the first with three runs to cut the deficit to 4-3. Lawrence Tech started the inning with a pair of walks and a single to load the bases. Brian Corbett (JR/Miamisburg, Ohio) got hit by a pitch to score Harry Storch (SO/Orlando, FL) for the team's first run of the game. Logan Barker (SO/Chatham, VA) followed with an RBI single to score Jared Roth (JR/Traverse City, Mich.) followed by a sacrifice fly from Tyler Childs (JR/Burt, Mich.) to score Jackson Walkowiak (SO/Grosse Pointe, MI) to make it 4-3 Lincoln.

Matt Baker (JR/Traverse City, Mich.) cruised through the second inning with three straight ground outs as he pitched three innings to start the game. Ben Schmidt (FR/Northville, Mich.) came into the game in the fourth inning and went five innings of relief with five strikeouts.

The Blue Devils tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI single from Sean Fannon(JR/Grosse Pointe, Mich.), scoring Logan Grizzell (JR/Colorado Springs, Colo.). They added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-4 lead as Corbett, Bushey, and Grizzell scored on a pair of wild pitches by the Lynx. Schmidt cruised through the sixth and seventh to keep the LTU lead intact.

Lawrence Tech added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make it a 10-4 game as Childs, Bushey, and Cleasby score for the Blue Devils. Childs scored off a pop fly while Bushey and Cleasby both scored on a wild pitch by Lincoln.

Lincoln added a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but and RBI single from Bushey pushed the Blue Devils lead to 11-6. Lincoln added a late run in the ninth, but Kyle Wolter (JR/Canton, Mich.) was able to get the final out to secure the win.

Bushey finished the game with one hit, one RBI, and a pair of runs followed by Corbett with two hits, one run, and one RBI. Fannon added a pair of hits and an RBI while Vandergroden went 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI. Schmidt earns the win for Lawrence Tech.

In the nightcap in Lake Wales, Lawrence Tech gave up a first inning homerun as Warner took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Blue Devils responded in the second inning with a two-run homerun by Barker to give Lawrence Tech the 2-1 lead. Childs made it 3-1 off an RBI single from Mohring.

The Blue Devils added three more runs in the third inning as Barker doubled to right center to score Cleasby followed by an RBI single from Ryan Robinette (JR/Midland, Mich.) to make it 5-1. Barker scored off Childs ground out to push the lead to 6-1.

Warner (23-9) added a run in the bottom of the third as LTU starter Matt Blunk (JR/Ann Arbor, Mich.) gave up an RBI double to cut the lead to 6-2. Blunk went seven innings, earning the win. He struck out five while allowing five runs on nine hits. The Blue Devils added two more runs in the top of the fourth to extend the lead to 8-2. Fannon's single and subsequent Royals error scored Grizzell. Corbett's sacrifice fly gave LTU their eighth run.

The Royals would score four more runs over the next three innings, but Lawrence Tech scored four runs in the sixth inning to make it 12-6 final. Corbett led the way for the Blue Devils, going 2-for-2 with three runs and an RBI. Barker went 2-for-5 with a homerun, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Harry Storch closed the game, going two innings with three strikeouts allowing just one run off two hits.

The Blue Devils are back on the field tomorrow when they face Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) University in a pair of games.
