TOLEDO, Ohio – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team swept Lourdes (Ohio) University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field in Toledo, Ohio. The Blue Devils won the first game 4-1 and took the second game 7-4.
Lawrence Tech (18-9, 2-2) got things started early as Sean Fannon (JR/Grosse Pointe, Mich.) doubled to right center to score Jared Roth (JR/Traverse City, Mich.) and give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. Matt Blunk (JR/Ann Arbor, Mich.) got the start on the mound, going eight innings allowing one run on five hits with seven strikeouts. Blunk cruised through the first four innings, striking out six and allowing no runs.
Fannon made it 2-0 in the top of the third, scoring Eddie Dopkowski (SO/Romeo, MI) followed by Brian Corbett (JR/Miamisburg, Ohio)'s RBI that scored Roth to make it 3-0. The Gray Wolves scored their lone run on a sacrifice fly, cutting the lead to 3-1. Blunk cruised through the sixth, seventh, and eighth, before giving way to Ben Schmidt (FR/Northville, Mich.) in the ninth. Schmidt earned the save, going one inning allowing no hits as he put the side down in order.
In the second game, Alek Wietrzykowski (SO/Toledo, Ohio) pitched a complete game to earn the win, 7-4. Wietrzykowski allowed four runs on eight hits to earn his second win of the season. The Blue Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Fannon opened the scoring for the second straight game, scoring Dopkowski on an infield hit to the pitcher to make it 1-0. Corbett singled in Tyler Childs (JR/Burt, Mich.) to give LTU a 2-0 lead followed by a Jackson Walkowiak (SO/Grosse Pointe, MI) RBI single to score Fannon to take a 3-0 lead. Corbett gave LTU a 4-0 lead, scoring on a balk by Lourdes.
The Blue Devils got into some trouble in the bottom of the third, putting the leadoff hitter on base but was able to get out of the inning with their lead intact. Lawrence Tech added a run in the fourth and sixth inning to push their lead to 7-0. The Gray Wolves added three runs in the bottom of the seventh and a run in the bottom of the eighth, but Wietrzykowski was able to close them down in the ninth to secure the win.
The Blue Devils are back on the field Saturday, March 30 when they head to Cornerstone (Mich.) University for a doubleheader in Grand Rapids, Mich. First pitch set for 1 p.m.
