AVE MARIA, Fla. — The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team dropped a pair of games at Ave Maria (Fla.) University 7-6 and 9-2 on a warm and sunny Monday afternoon in Ave Maria, Fla.
Lawrence Tech (12-5) opened game one with a 2-0 lead in the third inning as Jared Roth (JR/Traverse City, Mich.)'s double down the line scored Andrew Nepjuk (FR/Lake Orion, Mich.) and Nick Allen (FR/Macomb, Mich.). Ave Maria answered in the bottom of the third with a pair of runs off starter Jay Gallant (FR/Saginaw, Mich.). Gallant opened the game with a pair of scoreless innings, but a fielders choice and sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2.
Ave Maria (10-14) took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but a passed ball by the Gyrenes in the top of the fifth scored Nepjuk to tie the game at 3-3. Ave Maria responded in the sixth inning to retake the lead at 4-3 on a bases loaded walk.
The Blue Devils took the lead in the top of the seventh when Roth hit a tow-run shot to right field to give LTU a 5-4. Jackson Walkowiak (SO/Grosse Pointe, MI) pushed it to 6-4 with a solo shot to left field, but it wasn't enough as Ave Maria added three runs in the bottom half of the inning to win 7-6.
Roth finished the game with two hits and four RBI's while Nepjuk added a pair of run, and a walk going 1-for-1 from the plate. Harvey Freed (FR/Milford, Mich.), Harry Storch (SO/Orlando, FL), and David Klug (JR/Traverse City, Mich.) all pitched in relief for Lawrence Tech.
In game two, the Gyrenes took a 1-0 lead in the second, but Walkowiak's RBI single scored Sean Fannon (JR/Grosse Pointe, Mich.) to tie the game in the fourth inning. Walkowiak tied the game off an Ave Maira error to take a 2-1 lead. The Gyrenes then added seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-1 lead. Ave Maria added one run in the fifth inning to push its lead to 9-2.
Alex Wietrzykowski started the game and went three innings, giving up six runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Kyle Wolter (JR/Canton, Mich.) went an inning in relief, allowing two runs off four hits followed by Kyle Sabin (FR/Walled Lake, Mich.) and John Snow (FR/Monroe, Mich.). Walkowiak led the way with a pair of hits, an RBI and a run scored.
The Blue Devils are back on the diamond Tuesday March 12 when they head to Lake Wales, Fla., to face (RV) Warner (Fla.) University at 6 p.m.
