GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team splits its mid-week doubleheader at Cornerstone (Mich.) University, falling 7-3 in game one and taking game two 6-5 in a five inning game which was called due to darkness*.
Lawrence Tech (23-10. 5-3) opened the scoring in the first inning when Brian Corbett scored Harry Storch on an RBI single down the left field line to give LTU a 1-0 lead. The Golden Eagles responded with a pair of runs in the second, but the Blue Devils answered right back in the top of the third to tie it at 2-2. Sean Fannon reached on an error, scoring Eddie Dopkowski for the Blue Devils second run.
Cornerstone (11-16, 4-4) added runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh to take a 5-2 lead on Lawrence Tech. Jay Gallant got the start for the Blue Devils, going 3.2 innings allowing three runs on seven hits with a strikeout and a pair of walks. Caleb Homan went four innings allowing four runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Ben Schmidt pitched third of an inning in the eighth, allowing a hit and striking out one.
Jackson Walkowiak made it a two run game off an RBI double, scoring Fannon to make it 5-3 in the eighth. The Golden Eagles responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-3 lead. Noah Reed pitched the final two innings for Cornerstone to secure the win and earn his first save of the season.
In game two, the Golden Eagles took a 3-0 lead after two innings as Sam Brace got the start on the mound for Lawrence Tech. Brace went three innings allowing four runs – three earned – on five hits with two walks. Harry Storch went 1.1 innings allowing a run on one hit followed by Schmidt going two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout.
The Blue Devils got things going in the third inning as Ryan Robinette's RBI single scored Logan Grizzell to cut the lead to 3-1. Jared Roth came to the plate with the bases loaded, drawing a walk to score Fannn and make it a 3-2 game. Nick Allen got hit by a pitch to score Corbett and tie the game at 3-3. The Golden Eagles than walked Sean Marshall, plating Robinette to give Lawrence Tech the 4-3 lead. An error scored Roth to push the LTU lead to 5-3.
Lawrence Tech added a run in the fourth inning as Walkowiak scored Grizzell to give the Blue Devils a 6-3 lead. Cornerstone cut the lead to 6-5 with runs in the fourth and fifth inning, but the game was called due to darkness, giving LTU the 6-5 win.
The Blue Devils return to the diamond on Saturday, April 6 when they head to Adrian, Mich. to face Siena Heights (Mich.) University. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
*Cornerstone was without power today due to unforeseen power outage in the area and with light diminishing, the game was called after the fifth inning.
