Sam Brace Throws No-Hitter in Game Two, Blue Devils Sweep Rochester on Sunday 7-5 and 10-0

UTICA, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team swept the doubleheader against Rochester (Mich.) College as Sam Brace became the first Blue Devil to hurl a no-hitter, doing so in 10-0 win in game two. The Blue Devils took game one 7-5.

Brace went eight innings to earn the complete game win while allowing no hits. He got into early trouble as he hit two of the first five batters he faced, but that was all the trouble he saw on Sunday. He walked the second batter of the second inning, but induced a ground ball from the next hitter to get out of the inning with a double-play. In the third inning, he struck out the first batter but walked the second before a ground out and a strikeout got him through the inning.

Brace put the Warriors down in order in the fourth, fifth, and sixth inning before allowing a baserunner in the seventh inning after hitting him with a pitch. He cruised through the eighth before the Blue Devils would close the game out with a five run inning to end the game 10-0.

The Blue Devils (26-11, 8-4) scored three runs in the fourth inning as Luke Bushey's RBI single scored Ryan Robinette to make it 1-0. An error on the next two plays gave Lawrence Tech a 3-0 lead as Jared Roth and Bushey scored a pair of unearned runs.

Sean Fannon gave Lawrence Tech a 4-0 lead with an RBI single to left, scoring Tyler Cleasby. Robinette plated Fannon with an RBI single to right field to push the lead to 5-0. In the eighth inning, the Blue Devils added five more runs to secure Brace's no-hitter.

Harry Storch opened the scoring in the eighth with a two RBI single to left center to score Mansfield and Bushey to give LTU a 7-0 lead. Eddie Dopkowski made it 8-0 scoring on a wild pitch before Jackson Walkowiak's RBI scored Storch to extend the lead to 9-0. Jared Roth scored the game ending run with an RBI single through the right side, scoring Fannon to win the game 10-0 in eighth innings.

In game one of the day, the Blue Devils scored six of the first nine runs as they held a 6-3 lead after the second inning. Storch and Fannon scored the opening two runs off a Brian Corbett single followed by Walkowiak with an RBI that scored Corbett to give Lawrence Tech a 3-0 lead after the first inning. The Warriors added three runs in the top of the second to tie the game at 3-3 before the Blue Devils responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead at 6-3.

Jay Gallant got the start for Lawrence Tech, going six innings allowing four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts to earn his fourth win of the season. Gallant settled down after the second inning three-run shot he gave up to Bieszki. He got through the next four innings without any damage, paving the way for Caleb Homan. Homan went three innings to earn the three inning save, giving up just one run on three hits.

Rochester added a run in the top of the seventh and eighth before Lawrence Tech added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to go up 7-5. Homan got the Warriors out in order in the ninth to secure the win.

Lawrence Tech is back on the diamond Wednesday, April 10 when they travel to Saginaw Valley State (Mich.) University for a 3:05 p.m. start in Saginaw, Mich.
