UTICA, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team swept Cleary (Mich.) University on Saturday 5-4 and 9-6 to take the season series 2-0. Sean Fannon hit the walk-off homerun in the game one while Jackson Walkowiak's sacrifice fly scored the go ahead run in the game two's 9-6 win.
Lawrence Tech (29-11, 10-4) started with Matt Blunk on the mound in game one and he cruised through the first seven innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. The Blue Devils gave Blunk a 3-0 lead on Cleary heading into the top of the eighth inning, but a leadoff single and an error led to his removal. He was replaced by Jay Gallant who gave up an RBI single to put Cleary down 3-1. Ben Schmidt followed Gallant, allowing two runs – both credited to Gallant, one unearned – before getting a strikeout to end the inning.
Fannon came to the plate in the ninth inning with one runner on and one out and sent Larner's pitch off the right field foul pole for his third homerun of the season to give LTU a 5-4 win. Schmidt got the win in relief to move to 2-1 on the season. Fannon finished the game 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored.
In the second game, the Blue Devils Alek Wietrzykowski got the start, going four innings allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and six walks. The Blue Devils got on the board first as Fannon scored on a wild pitch to go up 1-0. Wietrzykowski pitched a clean second and gave up one run in the third off an RBI single.
Wietrzykowski was replaced by Caleb Homan in the fifth inning as the Blue Devils gave up four runs in the inning to trail the Cougars 5-1. Lawrence Tech added a second run in the bottom of the fifth off Harry Storch's RBI double to left center to cut the lead to 5-2. Corbett made it 5-3 with a bases loaded walk followed by a wild pitch to score Fannon and make it 5-4.
Cleary (8-19, 2-12) scored a sixth run in the top of the eighth off before the Blue Devils came back in the bottom half to score five and take a 9-6 lead. Storch sacrifice fly scored Sean Marshall to start the comeback, making it 6-5. Walkowiak followed with a sacrifice fly to center with the Blue Devils waving both runners home to take the 7-6 lead. Logan Barker made it a three-run game with a two-run shot to centerfield to give LTU a 9-6 lead.
Schmidt got through the ninth with ease, facing four hitters allowing a walk and striking out one to secure the win. Fannon went 1-for-2 with three walks and three runs scored. Barker went 1-for-1 with a homerun and two RBI.
The Blue Devils are back on the diamond Wednesday, April 17 when they travel to Madonna (Mich.) University for a doubleheader slated to start at 2 p.m.
