CRESTWOOD, Ill. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University baseball team defeated Roosevelt (Ill.) University 15-4 in game one and 7-0 in game two to open the season 2-0.
Lawrence Tech (2-0) used a strong fourth inning to give the Blue Devils a 9-2 lead as Nick Picchioni opened the scoring with a bases loaded walk to score Jackson Walkowiak and take a 2-1 lead. Collin Vandergroden reached on an error, plating Brian Corbett and Ryan Robinette to make it a 4-1 game. Nick Allen followed with an inside the park homerun, scoring Vandergroden and Picchioni to push the lead to 7-1. Sean Fannon scored on a fielding error by the centerfielder to go up 8-1 while Corbett's RBI single scored Walkowiak for the eight run lead.
Sam Brace got the start on the mound for the Blue Devils, going four innings allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and a pair of walks. Harvey Freed went two innings allowing one run on one hit with three strikeouts. Kyle Wolter pitched the final inning, facing four batters with two strikeouts.
In the fifth inning, the Blue Devils were able to add a pair of runs as Eddie Dopkowski walked with the bases loaded followed by a Fannon fielder's choice to give Lawrence Tech an 11-3 lead. Dopkowski plated a the 12th run of the game with an RBI single to extend the lead to 12-3 followed by Harry Storch with a two RBI double that scored Dopkowski and Allen to go up 14-3.
Fannon added a 15th run in the top of the sixth as he reached on an error, scoring Storch to lead 15-3. The Lakers added a run in the bottom of the sixth, but that would be it as they would fall 15-4.
The Blue Devils looked to sophomore Jay Gallant to start game two and he didn't disappoint, going six innings allowing no runs on three hits with six strikeouts and two walks to earn the win. The strong outing was supported by seven runs from the Blue Devils offense, highlighted by Tyler Childs four RBIs as he went 3-for-4 with a stolen base. Robinette went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and one stolen base.
Childs got the scoring started as his first inning single scored a pair of runs to give LTU a 2-0 lead as Robinette and Walkowiak scored for the Blue Devils. Childs made it 3-0 in the third inning with another RBI single scoring Corbett. He put the Blue Devils up 4-0 in the fifth with his third straight RBI single, this one scoring Fannon.
Corbett scored on a passed ball to give Lawrence Tech a 5-0 lead heading into the sixth inning. Childs made it 6-0 as he scored on a passed ball. Fannon hits his first triple of the season to score Sean Marshall and push the lead to 7-0.
Dominic Puecetti made his first collegiate appearance to close the game with three strikeouts as he faced the minimum in the seventh to preserve the 7-0 win.
The Blue Devils begin their second doubleheader of the weekend on Sunday at 12 p.m. EDT as they close the four-game weekend series with Roosevelt at Ozinga Field in Crestwood, Ill.
