Football Tames Lions of Trinity Bible, 68-7

ELLENDALE, North Dakota – The reboot Lawrence Technological University football program moved to 5-0 on the season with a 68-7 victory over Trinity Bible on Saturday, October 6, at the Bob Tatum Field in Ellendale, North Dakota. The Blue Devils ran up a season-high in points and yards, totaling 555 yards of offense against the Lions.

In the past three games, LTU (5-0) has scored a combined 195 points, while surrendering just seven.

The Blue and White outgained Trinity Bible (2-4), 555-111. This was the first game since September 8 that the Blue Devils' defense gave up more than 100 yards of total offense. LTU forced four turnovers in the effort.

Entering the game with one of the NAIA's top efficiencies on fourth down, Lawrence Tech converted on all four of its fourth-down attempts against TBC – moving its season mark to 9-of-11 (82%).

Of the Blue Devils 555 yards, 387 of them came on the ground. Ahmad Sabbagh(FR/Dearborn Heights, MI) and Tanner Foley (FR/Sebawing, MI) led the charge in the running game, tallying 129 and 95 yards, respectively. Sabbagh became the third Blue Devil running back to rush for 100 or more yards in a game this season. Foley, Sabbagh and Mekai Otero (FR/Orlando, FL) all found the endzone twice, as quarterback Tanner Jeska(FR/Monroe, MI) kept one for his second rushing score on the year.

Quarterback Tyler Kulka (FR/Clinton Township, MI) finished the day 6-of-8 for 75 yards. Jeska came in midway through the contest, completing 6-of-7 for 93 yards. Swoll back CJ Thompson (FR/Alma, MI)'s lone reception of the day went for a 12-yard touchdown. Terrel Cunningham (FR/Northsville, MI) hauled in two catches, including the first touchdown of the day. Kulka has 14 passing touchdowns and no interceptions five games into the year.

The Blue Devils defense jumped in front of three passes. Linebacker Robbie Best (FR/Struthers, OH) had the first pick of the afternoon. Cornerback Cam Mitchell (FR/Mount Clemens, MI) had the second, reading the quick strike and taking it back for six. It was the defense's fifth touchdown of the season, second pick six. Linebacker Hitesh Kumar (FR/Shelby Twp., MI) made the day's third interception. Best led the team with 4 tackles and a tackle for loss.

Lawrence Tech started fast despite the 16-plus hour bus ride to North Dakota. On the opening kickoff, Trinity Bible fumbled the ball inside its own 25-yard. Kulka capped off the possession with a strike to Cunningham.

After an ensuing three-and-out by Trinity Bible, LTU ran in for its second score of the opening quarter. Cam Jamison (FR/Burbank, WA) had 20 yards on the drive, only to be outdone by Foley's 22 yards and touchdown carry.

The Blue Devils forced another punt to setup their next drive on the TBC 47. Foley took the first four plays for 41 yards before Kulka found Thompson in the endzone from 12 yards out.

Possession four for the Lions ended abruptly with a fumble. Setting up in a formation that had the quarterback under center with the rest of the offense lined up on the far hash, the screen play was snuffed out by Mitchell who forced the fumble that was recovered by Zack Brown.

A pair of Otero rushes later, LTU found itself leading 28-0. The Blue Devils posted 34 points in the opening frame and took a 55-0 advantage into the locker room.

Lawrence Tech welcomes fellow first-year program and MSFA member Indiana Wesleyan to the LTU Athletic Field on Saturday, October 13. Kickoff of the Blue Devils' homecoming game is set for 12 pm.
