ROCHESTER, Mich.—The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's basketball team (1-0) began their season exactly how they wanted to, as they defeated Ohio Christian University (0-1) by a score of 84-75 in their first game of the season.
The first half saw both teams trading points for the first few minutes until the Blue Devils went on a little nine point run to create a little bit of distance between them and the Trail Blazers, making the score 21-8. The Blue Devils were able to keep the lead between 10 and 15 points for more of the first half until the Trail Blazers slowly started to cut the deficit and got the game back with eight points, 39-31. However, the Blue Devils were able to stretch their lead back to double digits before the half was over.
Leading the Blue Devils in scoring in the first half was the three year veteran, Alek Ivanovic. Ivanovic went 4-6 from the field including 3-4 from deep, giving him 12 points. Also in the double digits, Brandon Beavers went 4-5 from the field, and hit one from deep to give him a 10 point total in the first half.
The second was pretty even the entire half with both team scoring just over 40 points. Down nine in the second half with 17 minutes left, the Trail Blazers went on a small run to get themselves back in the game by making the score 50-49, but that was as close as they would get to a lead. The Blue Devils went on to score 14 of the next 20 points to get back out to nine point lead. The Blue Devil lead would grow to as large as 16 at one point, but in the end the Blue Devils left with a nine point victory over the Trail Blazers in game one of the season.
Beavers lead all Blue Devils with 24 points, 14 coming in the second half. He shot 7-8 from the field and was a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc. Behind him were two Blue Devils who each scored 17; Ivanovic and Gunnar Gustafson.
It was a very efficient offensive night for the Blue Devils. As a team they shot over 50% from the field, 52.8% and were just under 43% from behind the three point line.
Third year Head Coach Joshua Pickens had this to say about how his team played, "It was a great all around team effort by the guys. They came out, fought hard, and the results show that. Ohio Christian was a quality opponent and we needed to play all 40 minutes to leave here with a win. Our leaders stepped up when they needed to, and the young guys contributed in key situations. I was really happy to see the effort and focus from the guys for an entire game."
It will be one week exactly until the Blue Devils are back on the floor. They will be playing in the 2019 Bernie Holowicki Classic presented by Hampton Inn, in Novi. They will be facing off with Roosevelt (Ill.) University on Friday, November 1st @ 5:00 PM , and then on Saturday, November 2nd @ 3:00 PM vs. Brescia (Ky.) University.
