SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's soccer team needed a quality comeback after trailing 1-0 through the first 82 minutes, defeating Cornerstone (Mich.) University 2-1 in overtime at the LTU Athletic Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Blue Devils move on to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Semifinals at top-seed Madonna (Mich.) University.
Lawrence Tech (12-6-1, 9-3-0 WHAC) struggled in the first half even though they outshot the Golden Eagles 9-3. Kachinvya Silwamba scored the first goal of the game in the 19th minute to give the Golden Eagles the 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils had five shots following Cornerstone's goal but were unable to score and went to halftime down 1-0.
In the second half, the Blue Devils were close to scoring on several occasions, the clearest one being at the 68th minute of the second half when goalkeeper Joshua Mitchell saved a header by Chris Serwatka (SR/Troy, Mich.). Lawrence Tech worked hard on creating opportunities to tie the game. The Blue Devils had four corner kick opportunities between the 80th and 83rd minute. Santiago Amigo (SR/Madrid, Spain) equalized the game in the 83rd minute with a rebound goal that saw the back of the net following a team save by Cornerstone. This was Amigo's second goal of the season. The second half finished with the teams tied at 1-1.
The Blue Devils had two shots in the first overtime period before scoring the winning goal in the 96th minute when Alvaro Garcia (SR/Mallorca, Spain) chipped the ball over goalkeeper Mitchell. Nico Rodriguez-Bermejo (JR/Madrid, Spain) assisted on the game winner to send the Blue Devils to the WHAC Semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at top-seed Madonna. Opening kick is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
