PULASKI, Tenn. --The Lawrence Technological University (Mich.) men's soccer team (0-1) did not have the end result they were hoping for in their season opener on the road. The RedHawks of Martin Methodist (Tenn.) College (1-0) got out to an early lead, and that proved to be enough to hold off the Blue Devils. The game ended with a final score of 3-1 in favor of the RedHawks.
Martin Methodist struck first in the 5th minute of the opening half. Later in the first half, the RedHawks added to that lead and found themselves up 2-0 in the 25th minute. The Blue Devils were able to put pressure on the defense of the RedHawks but did not find the back of the net in the first half.
Scoring first in the second half were the RedHawks in the 72nd minute. This goal stretched their lead to 3-0. LTU would remain scoreless no more as Nico Rodriguez-Bermejo netted the Blue Devils first goal of the season in the 73rd minute to pull within two. In the final minute LTU threatened to score, but the RedHawks stood strong defensively to hold off the Blue Devils late surge.
"(We) put ourselves in a hole in the first half. Second half we showed what we're capable of. Blue Devils captain Bryce (Nicholson) said it himself, 'we have to have a killer mentality and play a whole game with it'," Head Coach Will Dyer said after tonight's contest.
The Blue Devils will look to bounce back on Wednesday, August 28th. They will be on the road again at Indian Wesleyan; Game time is set for 5:30 pm EST.
