SOUTHFIELD, Mich.—The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's soccer team (4-6, 3-1) will be squaring off against the Cleary (Mich.) University Cougars (4-4, 2-2) in a WHAC Saturday night match-up. The Cougars will be hosting the Blue Devils, who are coming off a 2-0 win over the Aquinas (Mich.) College Saints. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm EDT.
Entering the Saturday night match, the Blue Devils have seemed to hit their stride just over halfway through the season. They are winners of four of their last five matches, including three straight wins vs. WHAC opponents. In their most recent match vs. Aquinas, the Blue Devils had a strong second half where they scored their two goals of the match. Kevin Wright has been a bright spot for this team over the last three games. Wright has scored his four goals of the season during this three game winning streak, which is a team high. Also playing well for the Blue Devils is goalkeeper Max Jewett. Jewett has posted shutouts in three of their last four wins.
The Cougars are coming off back to back wins over conference opponents. They defeated Mich.-Dearborn 4-2 and Lourdes (Ohio) 4-1. Cleary's offense is led by senior forward, David Tetaj. Tetaj has been a headache for a lot of teams this season. He ranks No 4 in the nation with 3.14 shots on goal per game and No. 5 in the nation with 5.57 shots per game. He has found the back of the net seven times, which is leading the Cougars. In the net for the Cougars will be junior Juan Gomez. Gomez has started in the net for Cleary the last four games. On the season, Gomez has a save percentage of .667 and has a total of 22 saves.
The last time the Blue Devils and Cougars met on the field was the first time in program history. The Blue Devils won the inaugural match between the two programs by a score of 3-0. All three Blue Devil goals were scored in the first half. Alvaro Garcia scored in the 3rd minute off an assist from Alvaro Merino. Kevin Wright scored in the 29th minute. Ryan Resendes was credited with an assist on the goal off the foot of Wright. The third goal of the match was scored with just one second remaining in the 45th minute of the foot of Resendes. Merino was given the assist on the final goal of the match.
Look for the Blue Devils to try to get off to a fast start just as they did in their 2018 match vs. the Cougars. The match is set to begin at 7:00pm on Saturday, October 12th.
