Blue Devils Win Double Overtime Thriller vs. Lourdes (Ohio) in Sloppy Conditions

SYLVANIA, Ohio—The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's soccer team (6-9, 5-4) traveled to Lourdes (Ohio) University for a conference match that was critical in the WHAC standings. Both teams had to battle terrible weather, as rain never seemed to let up. A winner would not be decided until the 104th minute in double overtime. Both teams were held scoreless up until this point, and Lawrence Tech left with a 1-0 win.

FIRST HALF

A scoreless first half was dominated by the Blue Devils except for goals scored. They were able to get off seven shots compared to Lourdes' one shot. LTU also forced the Lourdes' goalie to make four saves.

SECOND HALF AND FIRST OT

The second half saw both teams near even in every category. Blue Devils took five shots and Lourdes took three. Max Jewett was forced to make one save, and the Lourdes goalkeeper had to make two saves. Neither team seemed to find a way to create many scoring chances in the awful weather conditions, and they were forced to head into overtime to try and decide a winner. The first overtime only saw one shot taken by either team, and that team was Lawrence Tech. The shot did not force any pressure on the Lourdes goalkeeper as it was not on goal. 100 minutes was not enough to decide a winner, so both teams got ready for another 10 minutes of soccer in the rain.

DOUBLE OVERTIME

The Blue Devils put the pressure on the Gray Wolves right as the double overtime period began, as Enric Miquel took a shot that was blocked by a Lourdes defender in the 102nd minute. With the rain coming down sideways, Juan Jaramillo slipped a pass to Kevin Wright who beat the Lourdes goalkeeper from the right side of the box and crossing to the left corner of the net, giving the Blue Devils a thrilling 1-0 win over the Gray Wolves.

WRAP-UP

Head Coach Will Dyer was proud of the way his team battled not only quality opponent in Lourdes but the weather as well, "The weather was absolutely awful, pair that with a Lourdes team who played really well, it makes for a very difficult match. Our boys continued to work together and made it happen. We did more than enough to win game, but just could not find the net early on. Now we need to get ready for a good Cornerstone team, and we have to go to their place. It should be a good challenge."

That game vs. Cornerstone (Mich.) University is scheduled for Wednesday, October 30th in Grand Rapids Mich. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
