SOUTHFIELD, Mich.—The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's soccer team will be playing for a chance to earn a trip to the WHAC Tournament Championship match for the third straight year. Standing in their way for the shot at a repeat as the WHAC Tournament Champions is an Indiana Tech squad that is looking for a bit of revenge from last year's conference tournament. The game location has been changed to the Legacy Center Sports in Brighton, Mich.
On November 10th, 2018, the Blue Devils and Warriors squared off in the WHAC Tournament Championship to determine who would get the automatic bid into the national tournament. The Blue Devils would prove to be too much for the Warriors and outplayed the Warriors to a 3-0 victory. It would be the first time in school history that the Blue Devils would hoist the conference tournament trophy, and you can guarantee they would love nothing more than to have an opportunity to do that again.
This season the two teams met at Blue Devil Stadium on Saturday, October 19th. As expected, both the Blue Devils and Warriors came out playing aggressive. Neither team seemed to create a legitimate scoring chance. Both teams worked to setup their offense, but the defensive play did not budge for either team. The Warriors were able to get off four shots, while the Blue Devils were able to take two. Both teams only registered only one shot on goa. In the second half, the Warriors came out fast in the second half and found themselves ahead 1-0 after just 26 seconds. For the next 13 minutes it went back to the back and forth play by the offenses, with neither team getting an edge. However, in the 59th minute the Warriors were able to grow their lead to two. The Blue Devils were able to get two more shots on goal, but the Warrior goalkeeper denied both scoring chances. This was all the action in the second half and the Blue Devils dropped the home match by a score of 2-0.
The Blue Devils are advancing to the semifinal match off a dramatic victory over the Saints of Aquinas (Mich.) College. Junior forward Michael Avila, scored in the 89th minute to lift the Blue Devils over the Saints by a score of 2-1, and the Blue Devils celebrated the home playoff victory shortly after. The celebration is short lived, because waiting for them is the No. 1 seeded, regular season WHAC champions, Warriors of Indiana Tech.
The quarterfinal match for the Warriors was not as dramatic as the Blue Devils victory. Indiana Tech. hosted the Wolverines of UM-Dearborn. The Wolverines and Warriors went into the half tied at 0-0, but three second half goals by the Warriors sent the Wolverines home with a 3-0 loss.
