SYLVANIA, Ohio – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's volleyball team fell to top-seed Lourdes (Ohio) University 3-0 (25-17, 25-16, 25-17) in the WHAC Tournament Semifinals on Friday, April 5.
Lawrence Tech (15-18) finished the match with a .068 hitting percentage with 20 kills and 15 errors as they competed in the first ever WHAC Tournament for men's volleyball. Joshua Eckert led the way with nine kills and a .318 hitting percentage with two aces while Second Team All-Conference Calvin Ooms added seven kills and an ace.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Gray Wolves came back to tie it at 7-7 after an LTU service error. Lourdes extended their lead to 18-13 as they went on to take the set 25-17. Lawrence Tech took the early lead again in set two, but Lourdes tied it at 5-5 as they gained momentum to take an 11-7 lead.
The Gray Wolves followed with 11 of the next 17 points to take a 22-13 lead enroute to a 25-16 set win to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set started with Lourdes taking a 5-1 lead on the Blue Devils, but LTU battled back to cut it to one at 12-11 following an Eckert kill. The Gray Wolves went on to take a 17-13 lead as they won the set 25-17.
The loss ends the season for Lawrence Tech, the most successful season to date. They won double-digits games for the first time in program history, earned a berth into the inaugural WHAC Men's Volleyball Tournament, and had a student-athlete earn All-Conference and All-Freshman honors for the first time in program history.
