WILLIAMSBURG, Ky.- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team finished the UC/Union Classic with two victories on Saturday, March 2. The Blue Devils defeated West Virginia Institute of Technology in the first game of the day, 5-4. LTU won the second game 3-0, over the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.). Lawrence Tech wrapped up the classic with a perfect record of 4-0.
In the final game against the Cumberlands (6-6), Alexa Cherney (JR/Farmington Hills, Mich. ) set the tone for Lawrence Tech (4-0) as she allowed no runs and one hit with seven strike outs. Cherney faced 23 batters and walked one in seven innings. Brittney Bult(JR/Brampton, Ontario), Meredith Adams (JR/Portage, Mich. ), and Sarah Hige(FR/Northville, Mich.) finished with a run each. Hige also drove in two runners, while Alex Amos (JR/Corona, Calif.) paced the squad with seven putouts behind the plate.
Over the first three innings, the teams were in a pitchers' duel as both teams combined for two hits and two runners left on base. It was in the fourth inning that a single by Hige drove in Bult and Adams to give LTU a 2-0 lead. The Blue Devils pushed their lead to 3-0 with a run by Hige in the seventh inning. Cherney shut down the Patriots in the bottom of the inning to hold on to a 3-0 win.
In the first game, Sydney Coe (SO/Napoleon, Mich.) started in the circle and pitched three innings in which she allowed three runs off six hits. Coe struck out three of 16 batters she faced. Faith Barden (FR/Coleman, Mich.) pitched for three innings and struck out three batters. Barden allowed one run off one hit. Sydney Schultz (JR/Commerce Twp, Mich.) pitched for the last inning and struck out one of the three batters she faced. Schultz allowed no runs and no hits.
Jackie Mattingly (JR/Chino Hills, Calif.) led the Blue Devils with two runs. Haley Mazon(FR/Braidwood, Ill.), Andra Malburg (SO/Maineville, Ohio), and Bailey Brown (JR/Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) contributed with a run each. Mazon led the team with seven putouts behind the plate.
West Virginia (2-4) took an early lead in the first inning after scoring one run. The Blue Devils scored four runs off three hits and two walks in the second inning to take a 4-1 lead. The Golden Bears cut the deficit to one in the top of the fourth inning. However, Lawrence Tech struck back with a run by Mattingly in the bottom of the inning. In the sixth inning, West Virginia scored another run, setting the score 5-4, but would not be enough as the Blue Devils held to the one-run advantage for the rest of the game.
The Blue Devils will be back on the field at the PFX Spring Games on Saturday, March 9 at 11:15 a.m. when they face off with Grace (Ind.) College and at 1:30 p.m. against Carlow (Pa.) University.
