Lawrence Tech Sweeps Embry-Riddle at PFX the Spring Games

CLERMONT, Fla.- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team swept Embry-Riddle, 5-4 and 4-0, on Sunday, March 10 in PFX Spring Games action. Andra Malburg (SO/Maineville, Ohio) drove in two runners at the bottom of the seventh inning to give LTU the win in the first game, while Sydney Schultz (JR/Commerce Twp, Mich.) shutout the Eagles in the second game.

Schultz toed the rubber for Lawrence Tech (8-0, 0-0) in the second game. She threw a gem in which she allowed five hits and one walk, and struck out four batters off the 26 she faced.

Meredith Adams (JR/Portage, Mich. ), Malburg, Kennedy Emmons (FR/Byron Center, Mich.), and Cherilyn Banas (SR/Oxford, Mich.) scored a run each for the Blue Devils. Lawrence Tech collected nine hits, Malburg and Sarah Hige (FR/Northville, Mich.) paced the squad with three off four at-bats. In addition, Adams, Malburg, and Hige drove in one runner each. Katie Kubiak (JR/Burlington, Wisc.) led the team with four putouts.

Neither team was able to find the edge in the first four innings. It was at the top of the fifth inning that the Blue Devils scored the four runs of the game. A single by Adams drove in Emmons to break the tie between the sides. Then, Banas scored off a single by Malburg, while Adams recorded a run off a single by Hige. Malburg scored the last run of the game on a wild pitch. Schultz shut down Embry-Riddle (3-11, 0-0) in fifth, sixth and seventh innings to hold on to a 4-0 win.

In the first game, Alexa Cherney (JR/Farmington Hills, Mich. ) started in the circle and pitched for five and two-third innings. Cherney allowed four runs off six hits and four walks. In addition, Cherney struck out two of the 24 batters she faced. Brittney Bult (JR/Brampton, Ontario) pitched in relief of Cherney for one and a third innings; she allowed no runs, no hits and no walks off the four batters she faced.

The Blue Devils outhit the Eagles, 11-6, and were led by Brittany Wieland (SO/Alexandria, Va.) with three off three at-bats. Adams, Bult, Wieland, Jackie Mattingly (JR/Chino Hills, Calif.), and Katie Cyster (SO/Wyandotte, Mich.) were in charge of scoring a run each for Lawrence Tech. Malburg and Haley Mazon (FR/Braidwood, Ill.) drove in two runners each, while Alex Amos (JR/Corona, Calif.) contributed with one. In addition, Malburg paced the Blue Devils with six putouts.

The Eagles took the lead in the second inning with a homer by Haley Basye and pushed the lead to 4-0 at the top of the sixth inning. However, the Blue Devils cut the four-run deficit to one at the bottom of the inning. A double by Malburg drove in Cyster and Bult in the last inning of the game to complete Lawrence Tech's comeback.

The Blue Devils will be back in action on Monday, March 11 when they face off with Marian (Ind.) University at 9 a.m., Missouri Baptist University at 11:15 a.m. and Doane (Neb.) University at 3:45 p.m.
