Weekly Preview: Lawrence Tech Faces Three WHAC Foes

SOUTHFIELD, Mich.- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team will play its Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference opener games against Madonna (Mich.) University on Wednesday, March 27 at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. in Livonia, Mich. The Blue Devils will then face off with Cleary (Mich.) University and the University of Michigan-Dearborn at UD Mercy on Friday, March 29 and Sunday, March 31, respectively. The games for both doubleheaders are scheduled at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Madonna, Cleary, and Michigan lead the all-time series against LTU. The Crusaders 4-1, the Cougars 2-1, and the Wolverines 3-2.

Last week, Lawrence Tech (18-2, 0-0) split the doubleheader against (RV) University of Rio Grande (18-10, 8-0). The Blue Devils defeated the Red Storm, 1-0, in the second game and fell 5-2 in the first.

Through 20 games, LTU has scored 97 runs and given up 36. The Blue Devils rank third in the NAIA for earned run average, 1.260. LTU has a 0.280 batting average and a 0.327 on base percentage. So far this season, the Blue Devil pitchers have left 91 runners on base.

Meredith Adams paces the squad with 13 runs and 16 RBIs. Brittany Wieland follows Adams with 12 runs. Sarah Hige leads the team with a 0.419 batting average and a 0.510 on-base percentage. Cherilyn Banas paces LTU with five stolen bases and Alexa Cherney leads the Blue Devil pitchers with 50 strikeouts, 8.20 per outing. Faith Barden follows Cherney with 24 strikeouts.

Madonna (16-8, 0-0) has scored 183 runs and surrendered 111 in 24 games. The Crusaders have a 0.345 batting average and a 0.450 on-base percentage. Madisen Henry leads the pitchers with 41 strikeouts, while Kattie Popko paces the team with a 0.482 batting average and 21 RBIs.

Cleary (11-5, 0-0) will face off with Cornerstone (Mich.) University prior to its matchup against the Blue Devils. Through 16 games, the Cougars have a 0.296 batting average and 0.378 on-base percentage. In addition, Cleary has scored 99 runs and allowed 65. Kaitlin Dormire leads the way for the team with a 0.422 batting average, while Kelly Schram paces the squad with 17 RBIs. Nicole Finazzo leads the Cougar pitchers with 2.51 strikeouts per outing.

Michigan (10-6, 0-0) will face off with Lourdes (Ohio) University and Siena Heights (Mich.) University prior to the game against LTU on Sunday, March 31. The Wolverines have a 0.288 batting average and 0.362 on-base percentage. Michigan has given up 76 runs and scored 98. Madelin Skene paces the squad with a 0.404 batting average. Rachel Clem leads the Wolverines with 14 RBIs and Ashlyn Henderson the pitchers with 19 strikeouts.
