Blue Devils Split Doubleheader with Cardinals; Mattingly Flies Out Eight Batters in Game Two

DETROIT, Mich.- The 25th- Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University split their Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader against Concordia (Mich.) University-Ann Arbor on Sunday, April 7. The Blue Devils won the second game, 5-2, and fell 1-0 in the first game. Jackie Mattingly flew out eight batters in game two.

Brittney Bult started in the circle for Lawrence Tech (25-6-1, 7-4-1) for the first five and two-thirds innings. Bult allowed two runs on three hits and sat down one of the 23 batters she faced. Faith Barden pitched in relief of Bult for one-third of an inning, in which she allowed no runs and no hits. Alexa Cherney toed the rubber in the seventh inning to register her second save thus far this season.

The Blue Devils took an early lead in the first inning when Sarah Hige stole home to give LTU a 1-0 lead. Bult shut down the Cardinals during the first five innings to hold on to the 1-0.

Concordia claimed the advantage with two runs in the sixth, only to see Lawrence Tech regain the lead at 5-2 with four runs in the bottom of the frame.  Bult scored Cyster to tie the game with a single down second base. Kubiak registered her 13th RBI of the season with a double as she drove in Bult. Mattingly sealed the Blue Devil victory with a single down second base to score Wieland and Emmons.

Cherney pitched for the seven innings of game one. The Farmington Hills, Mich. native allowed an unearned run on five hits and one walk. Cherney sat down 10 of the 29 batters she faced and registered 78 strikes off 108 pitches.  

The Cardinals scored the lone run of the game in the first inning when Kassidy Grandorff scored off a single by Kali Hill.

The Blue Devils return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 10 when they travel to Grand Rapids, Mich. to face off with Aquinas (Mich.) College. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. at the Gainey Complex.
