FORT WAYNE, Ind.- The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team defeated Indiana Tech 5-1 and 2-0 at the Warrior Park on Saturday, April 13.
Lawrence Tech (28-7-1, 10-5-1) and Indiana Tech (14-22, 6-9) had a pitchers' duel in game two as no runs were allowed until the 11th inning and combined for 17 runners left on base. Faith Barden threw a gem for the Blue Devils, surrendering four hits and no runs. Barden struck out 15 of the 38 batters she faced.
LTU found the edge in the top of the 11th inning. Katie Cyster singled to the left field to drive in Brittany Wieland and scored on a fielding error by the Warrior's left fielder Sarah Cummings. Barden shut down Indiana Tech in the bottom of the frame to hold on to the 2-0 victory.
Lawrence Tech (28-7-1, 10-5-1) had a slow start in the first game as Indiana Tech's (14-22, 6-9) pitcher Amanda Shonka only allowed one hit over the first three innings. The Warriors opened the scoring in the third inning off a single down the middle.
The Blue Devils answered on the fourth inning with two runs to claim the lead and did not let go of it for the rest of the effort. Andra Malburg scored Bailey Brown with a double down the left field to tie the game. Brittney Bult scored an unearned run to give LTU the 2-1 edge. Bult toed the rubber for seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and sat down four of the 26 batters she faced.
Meredith Adams drove in Kennedy Emmons and Sarah Hige with a double RBI down the right center in the fifth inning. LTU sealed the victory in the seventh inning when Wieland hit an RBI double down the left field to drive in Emmons for her second run of the day.
The Blue Devils return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 17 against Siena Heights (Mich.) University in Farmington Hills, Mich. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. at Harrison High School.
