CLERMONT, Fla.- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team notched two victories on Wednesday, March 13 against Indiana University-South Bend, 6-1, and St. Ambrose (Iowa) University, 8-0 in five innings. Brittany Wieland drove in three runners with her first homer of the season in the win against the Titans. Junior pitcher Alexa Cherney threw a gem against the Bees, her second this year.
In the first game, Faith Barden started on the circle and pitched for six and a-third innings. She struck out four of the 29 batters she faced. Barden allowed one run off four hits and four walks. Brittney Bult pitched in relief of Barden for two-third innings in which she surrendered no hits and no runs off the two batters she faced.
Wieland paced the squad with two runs, while Sarah Hige, Meredith Adams, Gina Barber, and Andra Malburg contributed with one run each. The Blue Devils collected six hits, led by Wieland and Malburg as they recorded two off three at-bats. Haley Mazon recorded team-high six putouts.
Lawrence Tech exploded for five runs in the first inning of the game. Barber and Adams scored LTU's first two runs off a double by Malburg. In the same inning, Wieland homered for the Blue Devils to drive in Malburg, Hige and herself to push the lead to 5-0. Wieland scored her second run of the game in the sixth inning off a passed ball to give Lawrence Tech a 6-0 lead. In the last inning of the game, Indiana University-South Bend (7-1, 0-0) cut the six-run deficit to five when Kaylee Darnell scored a run off a single by Brittany Vanderbrink.
Cherney toed the rubber during all five innings of the game against St. Ambrose (12-5, 0-0). She surrendered one hit and one walk, and sat down nine of the 16 batters she faced.
Adams and Katie Cyster led Lawrence Tech (12-1, 0-0) with two runs apiece, while Malburg, Wieland, Barber, and Bailey Brown contributed with one each. The Blue Devil outhit St. Ambrose, 11-1, and were led by Cyster as she went 3-for-3 at the plate. In addition, Adams and Wieland paced the squad by driving in three runners apiece.
Lawrence Tech started the game on the right foot as Cherney struck out three off the four batters she faced. LTU found the edge early on the game when Amos drove in Malburg with a single in the second inning. The Blue Devils increased their lead to four runs in the third inning as Barber and Cyster scored off a double by Adams and a single by Wieland drove in Adams two plays later. Lawrence tech sealed the victory in the fifth inning with four runs.
The Blue Devils will be back in action on Thursday, March 14 when they face off with Doane (Neb.) University at 1:30 p.m. and Missouri Baptist University at 3:45 p.m.
