HOWELL, Mich.- The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team fell 6-3 to Cleary (Mich.) University in an extended game to nine innings on Friday, April 26 at the Lake Trust Stadium.
Lawrence Tech (34-8-1, 16-5-1) opened the scoring in the second inning after Haley Mazon doubled to score Kennedy Emmons. The Blue Devils then added two more runs in the fifth inning to push the lead to 3-0. First, Britney Bult singled down the shortstop to drive in Gina Barber. Then, Andra Malburg scored a run off a wild pitch after Bailey Brown was flown out by Cleary's (27-14, 13-9) right fielder, Riley Montgomery.
The Cougars struck back in the bottom of the frame as they scored two runs to cut the deficit to one. Cleary took advantage of its momentum in the sixth inning and sealed the victory with four runs.
Faith Barden started on the mound and pitched for three innings in which she allowed no runs and no hits. Barden struck out nine of the 10 batters she faced and walked one. Sydney Schultz pitched in relief of Barden for three innings. Schultz surrendered six runs on three hits and three walks. In addition, the Commerce Township, Mich. native sat down four of the 18 batters she faced. Maegan Jodway made her collegiate debut as she toed the rubber for two innings, striking out four of the six batters she faced.
Lawrence Tech outhit the Cougars, 5-3, and was led by Mazon as she went 1-for-2 from the plate.
The Blue Devils return to the diamond on Saturday, April 27 to resume the last two innings of a previous game against the University of Michigan-Dearborn (17-19-1, 7-13-1) in Livonia, Mich. First pitch is set for 11:30 a.m. at Madonna (Mich.) University.
