SOUTHFIELD, Mich.- Seven student-athletes from the Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team were named to the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference All-Conference Teams, announced the league office on Wednesday, May 1.
Sarah Hige earned Newcomer of the Year, WHAC First Team All-Conference, and All-Defensive Team honors. The Northville, Mich. native became the first freshman from LTU's softball team to be named NOTY. Hige currently paces the Blue Devils with a 0.448 batting average, for which she sits third in the WHAC, 12 stolen bases, and 31 runs. In addition, Hige has a 0.503 on-base percentage.
In her second year at LTU, head coach Karen Baird earned Coach of the Year honors after leading LTU to a 34-8-1 overall record this season and a 16-5-1 in the conference, so far the best in program's history. Baird currently has a 334-371-1 career record.
Brittney Bult was named to the WHAC First Team All-Conference Team and Lawrence Tech's Champions of Character. Bult leads the conference pitchers with an average of 1.62 earned runs per game. The Brampton, Ontario native has struck out 50 batters in 17 games pitched and has a 10-3 record. As a batter, Bult has a 0.345 batting average this season, a 0.381 slug percentage, and has registered 15 RBIs.
Alexa Cherney earned WHAC First Team All-Conference Team honors. In 2017 and 2018, the Farmington Hills, Mich. native was named to the Second Team All-Conference and to the All-Defensive Team. Cherney sits third in the nation for saves with three and has a 10-3 pitching record. Cherney sits second in the WHAC for earned run average, 1.70, and batters struck out per outing, 8.83. In addition, she has sat down 130 batters.
Meredith Adams was named to the WHAC First Team All-Conference for the second team in her collegiate career. In previous years, Adams earned First Team All-Conference honors in 2017 and Second Team All-Conference in 2018. Adams has a 0.375 batting average, a 0.471 slug percentage, a 0.419 on-base percentage, and has recorded 25 RBIs and two homers thus far.
Shortstop Brittany Wieland was named to the WHAC Second Team All-Conference and All-Defensive Team. Wieland repeats Second Team All-Conference selection for the second straight year. Through 40 games, the Alexandria, Va. native has a 0.352 batting average, 0.491 slug percentage, 0.421 on-base percentage, and has hit two homers. Wieland paces the Blue Devils with 28 RBIs. Additionally, she has recorded 82 putouts and 58 assists with a 0.927 fielding percentage.
Catcher Alex Amos earned WHAC All-Defensive Team honors with 197 putouts and 13 assists with a 0.991 fielding percentage through 30 outings. The Corona, Calif. native has scored six runs on 13 hits this season.
Third baseman Andra Malburg was named to the WHAC All-Defensive Team. The Maineville, Ohio native has a 0.957 fielding percentage over 42 games with 34 putouts and 56 assists. As a batter, Malburg has a 0.345 batting average, a 0.381 slug percentage, a 0.400 on-base percentage, and has hit one homer. Malburg has also driven in 18 runners thus far.
Adams, Amos, Cherilyn Banas, Bailey Brown, Bult, Cherney, Katie Kubiak, Jackie Mattingly, Sydney Schultz, and Tayah Wagner earned WHAC All-Academic Honors for their work in the classroom. In the fall 2018 semester, the softball team had a 3.50 GPA, the fourth highest of LTU's 20 athletic teams.
Other awards include Pitcher of the Year Madisen Henry from Madonna (Mich.) University, Player of the Year Ashley Helmink from Siena Heights (Mich.) University, and Champions of Character Coach Jim Farrell from Cornerstone (Mich.) University.
The Blue Devils will return to the diamond on Thursday, May 2 at 2:30 p.m. to face off with Indiana Tech in the first game of the WHAC Tournament at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio. Lawrence Tech took second place in the conference regular season.
