SYLVANIA, Ohio- The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University softball team fell 6-3 to Indiana Tech in the first round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament on Monday, May 6.
Indiana Tech (24-25, 11-11) opened the scoring in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Lawrence Tech (34-9-1, 16-5-1) engineered a two-run comeback in the fourth inning to take the lead. Kennedy Emmons doubled to the left-center to drive in Brittney Bult to tie the game. Then, Alex Amos hit an RBI single down the middle to score Emmons and give LTU the 2-1 lead.
The Warriors tied the matchup in the seventh inning and sealed the victory in the top of the ninth with four runs. Haley Mazon scored Amos off an RBI double to the left field in the bottom of the frame, which would not be enough to tie the game and force the 10th inning.
Alexa Cherney started on the mound and pitched for eight and a third of an inning. The Farmington Hills, Mich. native allowed four runs – two earned - on five hits and four walks, and struck out 10 of the 33 batters she faced. Bult pitched in relief of Cherney for a third of an inning, in which she allowed two runs on three hits. Faith Barden pitched for a-third on an inning and surrendered no runs and no hits.
Lawrence Tech awaits for the NAIA Softball National Championship opening round announcement to confirm whether the team made it to the tournament.
This has been a historic season for the softball program with a team-high 34 wins, 110 allowed runs and a second-place finish in the WHAC regular season.
