BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. – The No. 4-ranked Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's lacrosse team fell to No. 3-ranked University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) 13-11 on Friday night at the DCDS Field House in Beverly Hills, Mich.
Lawrence Tech (0-1) and Cumberlands played eight minutes of scoreless lacrosse to open the game, but the Patriots were the first to net a goal at 21:32 of the first half. They added two more goals to take a 3-0 lead before the Blue Devils tied the game at 4-4 in the waning moments of the half.
Samantha Tullar of Cumberlands scored three of the opening four goals for the Patriots while Ashley Sherry (SO/Savage, Minn.) notched the season's first goal for Lawrence Tech. Sherry notched her second goal of the season four minutes later to cut it to 4-2. Lawrence Tech's Kaylee Patterson (SO/Grand Blanc, Mich.) made it a 4-3 game with 51 seconds left in the half. Anna Gagnon (JR/Grand Haven, Mich.) closed the half with her first goal of the season to tie the game at 4-4.
The Blue Devils came out of the break on fire, scoring the first three goals of the second half to take a 7-4 lead. Bella Van Buren (FR/Brighton, Mich.) scored her first two collegiate goals to open the half followed by Gagnon's second of the night.
The Patriots responded with two quick goals to cut the lead to 7-6. Sherry's third of the night gave the Blue Devils a two-goal lead with 18:59 left in the game. Gagnon and Patterson both scored for the Blue Devils, but Tullar got one in for Cumberlands to make it 12-10.
Gagnon made it 12-11 with 2:49 on the clock, but a Cumberlands goal with 1:26 remaining secured the 13-11 win for Cumberlands. The Blue Devils had their chances with 10 free-position shots including nine in the second half, but struggled to earn points off of them.
Dorie Coggin (SO/Hamilton, Ohio) made 12 saves in her season debut as the starting goalie. Gagnon finished with four goals and an assist while Sherry finished with three goals and an assist. Gabi Larkin (JR/South Lyon, Mich.) took the majority of the draw controls, finishing with five while Kady Waits (FR/Milford, Mich.) had a team high three caused turnovers.
Lawrence Tech returns to the field on February 23 when they host Calvin (Mich.) College at the DCDS Field House. Opening draw is set for 8 p.m.
