FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Moving to 5-0 in the WHAC, the Lawrence Technological University women's lacrosse team defeated Cleary University (Mich.) 22-4 on Friday. Up next for the Blue Devils, they play Madonna University at home on Saturday, April 6th at home where the draw is set to go up at 1 p.m. This game will also serve as their senior day, recognizing Jordan Messing and Maddie Barnewold for their contributions to the program.
Once again leading the team was Ashley Sherry, who grabbed seven points on the game from four goals and three assists. Anna Gagnon was only a step behind with four goals and two assists. Bella Van Buren and Kady Waits each had stand out games, each with five goals. Six Blue Devils scored in the win, each scoring more two or more goals. The other goal scorers were Kaylee Patterson with two goals and an assist and Gabi Larkin with two goals and two assists.
On the draw, LTU took control, winning 17 of the 27 draw controls, 11 of which were grabbed by Larkin. Larkin also nabbed a team high of six ground balls and had two caused turnovers. Abby Barnewold was right there with her, nabbing five draw controls and tied Gagnon the team high of three caused turnovers.
In net, Dorie Coggin had another solid night with 11 saves on 15 shots, including several big time point blank shots. She also grabbed a caused turnover and had three ground balls.
In every statistical category, the Blue Devils swept the Cougars, including limiting their turnovers to 11 compared to Cleary's 18, grabbed 26 ground balls compared to Cleary's 8 and went 100% on the clear.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lawrence Tech started off hot scoring their first goal in the first minute of play and did not look back afterwards, going on an eight goal run in under ten minutes. While Cleary notched two goals in five minutes, the Blue Devils continued to respond with multiple goals, including a buzzer beater from Gabi Larkin off a wide shot from teammate Abby Barnewold. Going into half, the Blue Devils made a statement with a 15-2 lead, including grabbing a running clock after only 20 minutes of play.
The second half saw more quick goals from fast breaks from the Blue Devils, including a second half opener that started from a Dorie Coggin caused turnover after running out of the cage for an interception, resulting in a goal from Bella Van Buren. Lawrence Tech continued their streak up ahead with several key plays, including the last shot of the game with a quick feed from Ashley Sherry to a cutting Gabi Larkin from in front of the cage for a back hand twizzler shot that went in top left, sealing the game with a 22-4 win.
Madonna travels to Harrison High school with a 2-7 record and being 0-4 in the WHAC with a recent 20-6 loss to Siena Hieghts (Mich.).
