FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Falling for the first time this season against a WHAC opponent, the NO. 8 Lawrence Technological University women's lacrosse team lost to NO. 4 Indiana Tech in a 14-13 battle on April 13.
Despite the loss, several Blue Devils found the back of the net, including Kady Waits who had four goals and two assists, leading the team with six points. Anna Gagnon grabbed two goals and an assist, while Gabi Larkin, Ashley Sherry, Bella Van Buren and Kaylee Patterson each had two points.
Waits also led the team with five ground balls with Axey Vang was right with her with four. Vang played aggressive on defense, grabbing a team high of three caused turnovers. On the draw, Abby Barnewold grabbed six draw controls while Gabi Larkin grabbed five, but all of this was still not enough to overcome the late run by the Warriors. Dorie Coggin grabbed her only eight saves in the second half, including several point blank stops.
The game was back and forth from the beginning, with the Blue Devils (8-7, 7-1) starting off hot with a three goal run before both teams got into a groove. When Lawrence Tech would find the back to the net, the Warriors (10-2, 7-2) would respond. However, a few back to back answers kept them in pace with the Blue Devils, ending the half 8-8. Several multiple turnovers from the Lawrence Tech team was key in this race back from the Warriors, including having many defensive stops but not many saves to go around in the first.
The first half, Lawrence Tech dominated the stats, out shooting the Warriors 21-12. However, a few crucial stops by the Indiana Tech keeper made the game close.
The second half saw the Blue Devils be out shot by the Warriors 18-7 and Indiana Tech picking up the pace, with 15 ground balls and grabbing two more draw controls than LTU.
Lawrence Tech open the second half with two goals, one from Kady Waits and the other from Gabi Larkin. The Warriors then got ahead with three goals, two of which came from Abby Barkdull within two minutes of each other. Then, Gabi Larkin, fed by Anna Gagnon found the back of the net to make the game within one. After this goal, the Blue Devils had a goal called off due to an illegal stick, but kept going and found a way past the Warrior's defense, this time with Waits scoring off an 8 meter. After a brief four minute period, Kaylee Patterson, fed from Bella Van Buren, got the go ahead goal, moving LTU up 13-12 with six minutes to go.
Indiana Tech then got the ball back with a quick assist and tied the game up with three minutes to go. They then capitalized off a quick free position following a draw control, moving to 14-13. A yellow card from the Indiana bench gave the Blue Devils an opportunity to capitalize, but a turnover forced inside the 8 meter by the Warriors gave them the time they need to close the game.
Up next for the Blue Devils is their last game of the season on April 17th against Aquinas College.
