SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's defeated Rochester (Mich.) College 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-10) on Wednesday night in Southfield, Mich. The win gives Lawrence Tech sole possession of first place in the WHAC with a 4-0 record.
Lawrence Tech (10-3, 4-0) breezed through their match as they hit .312 percent from the net with 47 kills on 109 total attacks. Brittany Schmidt led the way with 11 kills on 32 attempts while Kristi Doherty grabbed 37 assists. Zakia Hunt and Dacey Cook had nine kills each with Varvara Gromakova adding six kills. Isabelle McDonald finished with four kills on seven attacks with no errors while Lexi Szymoniak finished with 12 digs.
The Blue Devils struggled in the opening set, trailing the Warriors 9-4 before going on a 5-0 run to tie the match at nine. Hunt had a pair of kills and a block assist during that run. The teams went point-for-point for the next 10, but Lawrence Tech took control at 14-14, scoring the next seven points to take a 21-14 lead. Schmidt had three kills and a block assist while Szymoniak served for Lawrence Tech during the run. The Blue Devils closed the set out 25-17.
Lawrence Tech jumped out to an early 8-1 lead in set two as Doherty and Jess Lodge had strong service games. Nichole Hyduk continued the Blue Devils serving success, pushing the lead to 18-6 before Schmidt closed the set with a kill for a 25-11 win. In set three, Lawrence Tech continued their dominant performance with a 10-3 start before taking the set 25-10.
Lawrence Tech now hits the road for back-to-back games in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Friday, Sept. 21 and Saturday, Sept. 22. On Friday, the Blue Devils face Aquinas (Mich.) College at 7 p.m. at East Grand Rapids High School while facing Cornerstone (Mich.) University on Saturday at Cornerstone starting at 1 p.m.
