Women's Volleyball Splits the Final Day of 2019 GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic, takes down McPherson 3-1 and falls to Central Methodist in Five Sets

BELLEVUE, Neb. – The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University opened the second day of the 2019 GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic with a 3-1 win over McPherson (Kan.) College, but fell in the final match of the classic 3-2 to Central Methodist.

The Blue Devils (3-1) opened the day the way the closed Friday night, with a stellar opening set 25-20 win. They hit .419 with 17 kills on 31 attacks while holding McPherson to .194 hitting percentage and four errors.

In the second set, Lawrence Tech had a weekend best 19 kills as they won it 25-16 holding the Bulldogs to .093 hitting percentage. The Blue Devils struggled in the third set, dropping the only set of the match after a .088 hitting percentage, 25-16.

The Blue Devils won the fourth set even though they struggled from the floor as they had seven errors in the set, but pulled away late for a 25-22 win to seal the match 3-1. They win pushed the Blue Devils to a 3-0 record.

Lawrence Tech's Jessica Lodge had 13 kills while Zakia Hunt had a team high 14 kills to go with a block. Varvara Gromakova added 12 kills and had a team high .500 hitting percentage. Kristi Doherty added six kills, 45 assists, and 13 digs.

In the final match of the classic, the Blue Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead as they took the opening two sets 25-23, 25-23. However, Central Methodist did not fold, responding with a 25-13 win in set three and tied the match at 2-2 as they won set four 25-18.

In the final set, the Blue Devils went up early at 4-1, but a kill and an ace gave Central Methodist the fifth 15-13 to take the match 3-2. Hunt led Lawrence Tech with 15 kills and a .282 hitting percentage while Isabella McDonald finished with 14 kills. Doherty added seven kills, 42 assists, and 26 digs in the win. Lodge added 10 kills and an ace.

The Blue Devils return to the court on September 6 when they head to the Gray Wolves Classic in Sylvania, Ohio hosted by Lourdes (Ohio) University. They open with West Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. followed by Grace (Ind.) at 3 p.m. On Saturday, September 7, they'll see Shawnee State (Ohio) University at 9 a.m.
