FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The (RV) Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's volleyball team defeated Indiana Tech 3-1 (24-26, 25-19, 25-16, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon Fort Wayne, Ind. The win gives Lawrence Tech 12-straight wins as they remain unbeaten in the WHAC at 9-0.
Lawrence Tech (15-1, 9-0) dropped the opening set 26-24, but the Blue Devils would go on to take the next three sets for the win. Varvara Gromakova led the way with nine kills and nine digs while Zakia Hunt continues to hit above .300 percent with eight kills and one error on 22 total attacks. Hunt also added six block assists and three solo blocks as she led the team with 14 points. Kristi Doherty recorded 26 assists and had two aces with 16 digs.
The Blue Devils cruised to a 5-0 lead in the opening set, but Indiana Tech battled back to cut it to 8-6. Lawrence Tech pushed the lead to 20-11 as Lodge and Mackenzie Fisher held serve for the Blue Devils. The Warriors did not wilt, mounting an epic comeback that started with a 14-4 run to take the opening set 26-24 to take a 1-0 lead.
In set two, Lawrence Tech took a 4-1 lead early on as Shelby Rasch started on serve and had an ace with three attack errors to start. The Warriors cut the lead to 7-6, but the Blue Devils stood strong with 5-1 run to push the lead up to 14-8 as Gromakova had a pair of kills in the run with McDonald earning two as well. The Blue Devil closed the set out with five of the final seven points to tie the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 win.
Varvara Gromakova gave Lawrence Tech a 6-1 lead to start the third as she served the first six service points the Blue Devils. Hunt finished the opening run with a pair of solo blocks and a kill as LTU would go on to take a 20-11 lead. This time, the Blue Devils held on for the 25-16 set win to take a 2-1 lead on the Warriors.
In the final set of the match, Lawrence Tech trailed the Warriors 12-9 as Genna Karbowski served for Indiana Tech. However, the Blue Devils battled back to tie the set at 13-13 with an ace from Rasch and kills from Lodge and Gromakova. Gromakova than went on a 6-0 run off her serve with an ace and three attack errors by the Warriors to take a 17-13 lead. Doherty sealed the win off her serve, getting the final two points off attack errors from Indiana Tech for a 25-20 win.
Lawrence Tech heads to Adrian, Mich. on October 9 as they face Siena Heights (Mich.) University. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
