SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Lawrence Technological University women's cross country team competed in the college division 6k race at the Spartan Invite held at Forest Akers East Golf Course this Friday morning.
For the second week in a row, the team battled the elements. This time it was the heat and humidity. Last week they had bad racing conditions in the rain with a messy and muddy course at the Bethany Invite.
In the race, they were once again led by Marissa Bradley (SR/Haslett, Mich.) who placed 128th out of 232 runners in a time of 25:21. She was followed by Michelle Meister (SO/Hoffman Estates, Ill) who came in 182nd at 27:20, then Hailey Catania (FR/Clarkston, Mich.) at 188th finishing at 27:56, Emily Gandolfi (JR/McBain, MI) came in 204th with a time of 29:29 and finally Monica Ellicott(SR/Caro, Mich.) finished 212th with a time of 30:24.
While the conditions may have been bad for the men, the ladies had to brave even worse conditions, according to Coach Eric Green, "The conditions were even worse for the ladies as it was warmer at the start of their race. We had a couple of them struggle to get through the conditions and as they finished and needed assistance to the medical tent to get treatment for over exerting themselves with the humid conditions."
In the end, Coach Green was positive of the overall performance of the women's team, "I was proud of the way they competed in the race and most of them still ran faster in the 6k than they did last week in West Virginia." Looking ahead, he is also positive that a break and the coming meet will be a good one, "We have two weeks before our next race in Louisville and I guarantee that it will be one of our best races of the year. We have traditionally always done well as a team at that race."
The next race for the Blue Devils is down in Louisvulle, Ky. on September 29 at the Louisville Classic.
