ADRIAN, Mich. - The 20th-ranked Lawrence Technological University (LTU) women's basketball team won its fifth straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) game defeating Siena Heights (Mich.) University 72-57 on Saturday night. It also marks the first season sweep of Siena Heights in program history.
Lawrence Tech (14-1, 11-1 WHAC) was led by a trio of player including Christina Henry (JR/Lansing, Mich.) who records her second consecutive double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Jazmine Brown (SR/Chesterfield, MI) added 17 points and four rebounds, while Hali Butler (SR/Fairport Harbor, OH) recorded 10 points and nine rebounds. Nicole Buckingham (FR/Saginaw, Mich.) led the team with six assists and went 2-for-3 from the beyond the arc.
LTU trailed 6-2 to open the game, but a quick 10-2 run gave the Blue Devils a 12-6 lead with 2:14 left in the first quarter. LTU finished the first with a 15-12 lead following a Nicole Buckingham three-pointer.
Siena Heights (12-7, 6-6 WHAC) opened the second quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 22-17 lead with 4:36 left in the half. Ashley Perry gave the Saints a 29-25 lead with 2:08 on the clock, but a 6-1 run to close the half gave the Blue Devils a 31-30 lead.
LTU opened the third quarter with a 37-32 lead after an Allison Kitchen (JR/Clio, MI) layup, however Siena Heights battled back to take the lead 38-37 following a Ra'Shawn Calvert three with 5:40 on the clock. Lawrence Tech would retake the lead after an 8-0 run, 45-38.
The Saints did not wilt as they cut the lead to 46-45, however that is as close as they would get as LTU built a 51-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Lawrence Tech continued where it left off in the third with the first six points of the fourth to take a 57-47 lead with 7:32 left in the game.
The Blue Devils ended the game on a 14-8 run to seal the 72-57 win. LTU finished the game shooting 41.5 percent from the field while keeping Siena Heights to just 36.4 percent. The Blue Devils outrebounded the Saints 45 to 28 including 18-9 advantage on the offensive boards.
Lawrence Tech is back in action on Wednesday, January 20 when they travel to Marygrove (Mich.) College. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
