Lawrence Technological University

Medical Policy

As of 12/17/25 student-athletes who are covered under Medicaid are no longer required to purchase short-term insurance coverage through the University. You may choose to remain on Medicaid; however, it is important that you understand how this decision affects the coordination of your medical care related to athletic participation.

Student-athletes with Medicaid will be required to sign an acknowledgment form understanding Lawrence Technological University's policy listed below.

Policy for Student-Athletes Covered Solely Under Medicaid

Therefore, it is the policy of the Lawrence Technological University Athletic Department that:

1.  No Secondary Claims Will Be Filed

When a student-athlete is insured solely under Medicaid, Lawrence Technological University will not file a secondary insurance claim under the institution's athletic accident policy or any other secondary coverage held by the institution, unless otherwise by law.

2.  Access to Medical Care

The Athletic Department, in coordination with Sports Medicine staff, will make every reasonable effort to facilitate access to appropriate medical care and services for student-athletes covered under Medicaid.  However, due to Medicaid provider limitations, prior authorization requirements, and provider availability, access to care may be delayed when compared to care facilitated under commercial insurance plans.

3.  Out of State Medicaid Coverage

Student-Athletes who are covered under Medicaid from a state other than Michigan may be required to return to their home state to receive medical care.  Student-athletes are strongly encouraged to explore applying for Michigan Medicaid to help reduce potential disruptions in care.

4.  Student-Athlete Responsibility

Student-Athletes are responsible for informing the Athletic Department of their current insurance coverage, including any changes.  Failure to provide accurate and timely insurance information may result in delays or impact access to medical care.

5.  Acknowledgment of Understanding

Student-athletes will be required to acknowledge their understanding of this policy and agree to cooperate with the University in the coordination of care.  This policy does not limit or eliminate any rights a student-athlete may have under federal or state law; it is intended to outline institutional procedures for transparency and operational efficiency.

If you have questions about this policy, your insurance options, or how this may affect your medical care, please contact Marloes Blokdijk or the Athletic Training staff.  We are committed to supporting your health and well-being while ensuring clear and consistent processes. Â
