[RV] LTU overcomes 14-point deficit late in third quarter to defeat Cornerstone 73-61

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The [RV] Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team overcame a 14-point deficit in the third quarter to beat Cornerstone (Mich.) University 73-61 on Saturday afternoon in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Lawrence Tech (9-4, 6-2) trailed Cornerstone 41-27 with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter, but a 21-6 run by the Blue Devils gave LTU a 48-47 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Christina Henry (SR/Lansing, Mich.) was the catalyst behind the run, scoring eight points including a steal to cut the CU lead to 41-35.

The Blue Devils added a layup from Allison Kitchen (SR/Clio, MI) with Nicole Buckingham (SO/Saginaw, Mich.) adding six points and Hayley Walkowski (JR/Marshall, MI) grabbing a defensive rebound, two assists, a steal, and four points during the closing stretch of the third quarter.

Cornerstone (7-6, 5-3) came out in the fourth quarter and took a one-point lead, but Buckingham stole the ball and hit a layup to give LTU the lead for good (52-51) with 8:06 left in the game. Lawrence Tech closed the game on a 21-10 run to secure their first win at Cornerstone and just their second win in the all-time series.

The Golden Eagles held a 29-24 lead at halftime following a strong second quarter as they outscored Lawrence Tech 19-10. LTU shot just 32 percent from the field in the first half, but went 18-for-28 (64.3%) in the second half to complete the comeback.

Walkowski, Buckingham, and Henry all scored 18 points each with Walkowski a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line to go with five rebounds and three assists. Henry and Buckingham each had five rebounds with Buckingham having five assists and Henry adding three steals.

Jesse Sheridan of Cornerstone led all scorers with 24 points in 34 minutes while Cass Vredevoogd adding 13 points and six rebounds.

Lawrence Tech is back on the court Tuesday, October 20 when they travel to Olivet, Mich., to face Olivet (Mich.) College in non-conference action.
