SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - The No. 18-ranked and second-seed Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team host third-seed Madonna (Mich.) University in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Semifinal game at Don Ridler Field House in Southfield, Mich. Tip is set for 1 p.m.
Lawrence Tech (23-3, 19-3 WHAC) overcame a sluggish three quarters to defeat University of Northwestern Ohio 56-44 on Thursday night in the WHAC quarterfinals. Jazmine Brown (SR/Chesterfield, MI) led the way for the Blue Devils with 14 points, 6 rebounds, five blocks, and two assists. LTU used a 27-6 fourth quarter run to get the program's first WHAC Tournament win.
Madonna (17-10, 16-6 WHAC) enters the semifinal game following an 81-76 win over the sixth-seed Siena Heights (Mich.) University on Thursday night in Livonia, Mich. Lindsey Hernden finished with a team high 27 points on 5-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc.
The Blue Devils and Crusaders met in the first game of conference play on November 14, 2015 in Livonia, Mich., with LTU winning 93-73 behind 29 points from First Team All-WHAC selection Allison Kitchen (JR/Clio, MI). WHAC All-Defensive team selection Hali Butler (SR/Fairport Harbor, OH) along with WHAC All-Academic player Maegan Branham (JR/Michigan Center, MI), and Brown added 10 points each. Lindsey Hernden finished with 12 points for Madonna followed by Becca Sabol and Justice Dean each added 10 points in the loss.
In Southfield, on January 23, 2016 Lawrence Tech defeated Madonna 67-62 behind 25 points from First-Team All-WHAC selection Christina Henry (JR/Lansing, Mich.)'s 25 points, 14 rebounds, six steals, and five assists. Kitchen and Butler add 13 and 12 points respectively. WHAC All-Freshman player Nicole Buckingham (FR/Saginaw, Mich.) added seven points and five rebounds. Chris Harper led the way for the Crusaders with 18 points followed by Becca Sabol with 13 points.
Lawrence Tech is ranked first in NAIA Division II in three-point field goal defense (0.245), fourth in total rebound margin (11.81), sixth in total rebound defense (32.54), seventh in scoring defense per game (56.77) and field goal percentage (0.457), ninth in total rebounds per game (44.35) and defensive rebounds per game (30.15), and 10th in field goal percentage defense (0.350). Butler leads the team in points per game at 14.12 and rebounds per game at 7.39.
Madonna ranks 17th in NAIA Division II three-point field goals made per game (7.85), 20th in three-point percentage defense (0.285), 21st in blocks per game (3.67), and 26th in three-point field goal percent (0.340). WHAC Player of the Year Becca Sabol leads the team in points per game (16.33), rebounds per game (10.33), steals per game (1.67), and blocks per game (2.11).
