DEARBORN, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team defeated University of Michigan - Dearborn 62-50 on Wednesday night in Dearborn, Mich.
Lawrence Tech (14-10, 10-7) trailed 38-35, but closed the third quarter on a 9-2 run to take a 44-40 lead in to the final 10 minutes where the Blue Devils pulled away from the Wolverines for the 20-point win. LTU opened the game with a 15-11 lead after the first as Christina Henry (SR/Lansing, Mich.) and Hayley Walkowski (JR/Marshall, MI) sparked the Blue Devils off the bench.
Michigan - Dearborn (5-20, 2-15) trailed the Blue Devils by as many as 11 in the second quarter, but the Wolverines cut the lead to six at halftime, 27-21. In the third quarter, the Wolverines were able to come all the way back to take a 34-33 lead with 4:31 left in the quarter. LTU responded with a 9-2 run to take a 44-40 lead into the final quarter.
The Wolverines cut the lead to two, but the Blue Devils were too much as they went on an 18-6 run in the fourth to pull away for the 12-point win, 62-50.
Nicole Buckingham (SO/Saginaw, Mich.) led the way for LTU with 24 points, four rebounds, and a block while Walkowski added 13 points and two rebounds. Allison Kitchen (SR/Clio, MI) finished the game with 10 points and four rebounds while Cherilyn Banas (SO/Oxford, Mich.) added four assists. Henry recorded a team high six rebounds and score nine points on 4-for-6 shooting from the field.
Jeorgia Jones led the way for UMD with 20 points and four rebounds, but they committed 20 turnovers with LTU having 13 steals in loss.
Lawrence Tech returns home on Feb. 4 when they host Cornerstone (Mich.) University at Don Ridler Field House. This game is the annual Coaches vs. Cancer game, so remember to wear pink to beat cancer. Opening tip is set for 1 p.m.
