ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team defeated Concordia (Mich.) University - Ann Arbor 65-52 in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Wednesday night.
Lawrence Tech (16-12, 12-9) now sits in sole possession of fourth place and a game-up on Concordia with one game to play. The top four teams in the WHAC earn home dates in the opening round of the WHAC tournament. LTU host Marygrove (Mich.) College on Saturday, Feb. 18 while Concordia travels to Madonna (Mich.) University.
The Blue Devils trailed the Cardinals 16-15 early on, but a strong second quarter gave Lawrence Tech a 30-29 halftime lead. Concordia went up 14-9 in the first quarter with 4:02 left on the clock following a Kari Borowiak three, however the Lawrence Tech cut it to one after a pair of jumpers, one from Nicole Buckingham (SO/Saginaw, Mich.) and the other from Christina Henry (SR/Lansing, Mich.).
Concordia (18-11, 11-10) went up 22-17 in the second quarter before Lawrence Tech went on a 13-7 run to take a 30-29 lead into halftime.
Lawrence Tech came out of the locker room on fire with Cherilyn Banas (SO/Oxford, Mich.), Allison Kitchen (SR/Clio, MI), and Buckingham hitting three straight field goals to give LTU a 36-29 lead with 8:07 left in the third quarter. Borowiak cut the deficit to three following a three-point field goal, however the Blue Devils continued to make shots and took a 47-37 lead into the final quarter.
The Cardinals cut the lead to eight, but Henry made a basket and drew the foul to put LTU up 11 and the Blue Devils never looked back taking the game 65-52.
Buckingham led the team with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Henry added 13 points and nine rebounds in the win. Allison Kitchen finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, Hayley Walkowski (JR/Marshall, MI) added 10 points and six rebounds to go with three steals and three assists. Cherilyn Banas recorded 10 points, three assists, and six rebounds.
Concordia was led by Borowiak with a game high 18 points to go with five rebounds and two blocks while Mia Long added 13 points and six rebounds.
Lawrence Tech returns home for the final regular season game against Marygrove. Opening tip is set for 1 p.m. with senior day festivities starting at 12:50 p.m.
