SOUTHFIELD, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University women's basketball team defeated University of Northwestern Ohio 74-52 on Wednesday night.
Hayley Walkowski (SR/Marshall, MI) became the fourth player in Lawrence Tech history to reach 1,000 points. She joins Nicole Buckingham (JR/Saginaw, Mich.) (1,067pts), Allison Kitchen (1,161), and Hali Butler (1,275) in the 1,000 point club.
How it Happened
The Racers hit the first basket of the game as Cori Dickson nailed a three to open the scoring. Lawrence Tech responded with seven of the next nine points to take a 7-5 lead following a Rachel Price (SO/Springboro, Ohio) jumper with 6:05 left in the quarter. Danielle Hanson (SO/East Lansing, Mich.) hit a free-throw to give LTU an 8-5 lead, but the Racers retook the lead 10-8 with just under two minutes. Teryn Kline (FR/Fort Wayne, IN) followed with a three to put LTU up 11-10, but UNOH hit the final field-goal of the first quarter for a 12-11 Racers lead.
Lawrence Tech shot 3-for-24 from the field in the opening quarter but started the second quarter on a 10-2 run to give the Blue Devils a 21-15 lead 6:53 left until halftime. UNOH cut the lead back down to three, but Kaitlyn Smith (SO/Holly, Mich.) hit a three to give LTU the six point lead. Lawrence Tech closed the second quarter with a 14-4 run to take a 35-21 lead into the break.
Hanson put the Blue Devils up 22 points in the third quarter as she got a basket and a foul to give LTU a 54-32 lead. In the final quarter, Nicole Buckingham hit jumper to give the Blue Devils a 24 point lead with 6:43 left in the game. Alex Ruster (SR/Warren, MI) scored six straight point to put LTU up 69-48 while Julia James (FR/Oxford, Mich.) closed the game with a jumper to give Lawrence Tech the 74-52 win.
