Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological University women's basketball team pulled out a second half scoring streak to beat the Aquinas College (Mich.) Saints on the road with a final score of 71-62.

Four different Blue Devils had double digit points in the match, but highlighting them all was a double double from the hands of Danielle Hanson, who had a staggering 15 rebounds and ten points on the night. Leading in points all around was Kaitlyn Smith, who was over 50% from every spot on the court, grabbing a total of 19 points and having several perfectly timed three point shots. Teryn Kine was right with her grabbing 14 points. Also going for double digits was Kendall Fisher who had 11 points on the night and led the team with seven assists.

The first two quarters of the match versus the Saints (5-6, 3-2) was tight, with each team grabbing 17 points in the first and 14 points in the second. In the first, the Blue Devils (8-3,4-1) allowed more opportunities for the Saints to take the lead, yet Aquinas did not capitalize. The second was the opposite, with the Blue Devils not hitting any three points shots and going 37% from inside. Luckily, a dominate force came from LTU, with them grabbing 13 rebounds, having on steal and limiting the Saints to a low 30% from both the inside and outside the three point line.

Going into the second half of the game, the Blue Devils came in with a chip on their shoulder and took control of the rest of the game, especially in the fourth. In the third, though, it was still a tight game, with Aquinas grabbing the lead with seven minutes to go. However, the lady Blue Devils made three three point shots in a row, to go up 43-40. They put Aquinas down to a 25% from the field goal range and limited them to a devastating 16% from outside in conclusion of the third. Lawrence Tech themselves went 57% from outside, both from the hands of Smith and Kline. Gaining momentum was two steals, one from Fisher and the other from Rachel Price, and two huge defensive blocks, one from Hope Dollarhide and the other from Price as well.

Going into the fourth, the Blue Devils were up 44-42. Going into the fourth, Price started the momentum up again with a three point shot to open the final quarter. This was immediately followed by a Saints lay-up, but Kline hit her signature three point shot to increase the lead to 50-44. They continued to dominate and race ahead, including four three pointers made through the quarter for a 50% average outside. They also hit 50% from inside and missed only one free throw out of their six opportunities, all of which were taken by Fisher. They had found their rhythm, grabbing six assists, 12 rebounds and forcing the Saints to another low performing quarter.

Overall, the Blue Devils went nearly 40% from the field goal range and Aquinas went nearly 32%. Lawrence Tech had a total of 47 rebounds while the Saints grabbed 45, displaying just how close this game was throughout. However, the 44% from the three point line put up by the Blue Devils was the deciding factor in this match.

Next up, the Blue Devils have two back to back home games in the following week. First is a match against Holy Cross (Ind.) on Wednesday, December 11th at 6:00 p.m.. Then, concluding their home games of 2019, the Blue Devils host the University of Michigan - Dearborn Wolverines to Don Ridler Field House on Saturday, November 14th where tip off is set for 1:00 p.m..
