Huey's Career Day Leads Blue Devils to Victory

Box Score

Southfield, MI - The Lawrence Technological University Blue Devils women's basketball team played host to the Ave Maria Gyrenes to kick off the 2021 Blue Devil Classic Tournament.

Julia Huey had a day for the ages. The junior from Fort Wayne, Indiana lead all scorers with a career-high 26 points off a career-high seven made threes. Kylee Batey and Kendall Fisher each added seven points, along with 12 rebounds for Batey and eight rebounds, 10 assists for Fisher. Maggie Long chipped in nine points in 22 minutes off the bench.

Ave Maria jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before Huey made the first of her seven threes to cut the Gyrene lead to just one.

A few moments later, after the teams traded a basket, Dominique Evans' free throws gave LTU the lead and started an 8-4 run to close out the quarter.

The Blue Devils led 15-12 despite shooting just 3-of-14, 21.4 percent, after one.

The Gyrenes started the second quarter off with a 4-1 run to knot the score at 16 one minute into the quarter.

Huey's second triple broke the tie to give LTU a 19-16 lead.

Another 5-1 run across the next four minutes by the Gyrenes gave them a 21-20 lead with just under five minutes to play in the half.

After a Jade Faris jumper, Batey and Catie Reszel trade single free throws to give LTU a 23-22 lead.

Free throws by Huey and Faris, followed by a Maggie Long layup increased the Blue Devil lead to six with two minutes remaining in the half.

A Long free-throw and another Huey trey extended the lead to 10, scoring nine straight for the Blue Devils.

A Gianna Santacroce layup cut the Blue Devil lead to eight heading into the locker room.

Blue Devils lead 32-24 at the half, with Huey leading the way with 10 points, Long with five.

A Kirstyn Lunniss layup followed by another Huey three extended the Blue Devil lead to 13.

Lavariah Armstead layups sandwiched yet another Huey three, making it a 12-point game.

Huey knocks down back-to-back threes and a Long layup brings the lead to 20, 48-28.

The teams would trade the next six points each before an Ave Maria 7-2 run ends the third quarter.

After three, the Blue Devils' lead was 15, 56-41.

The fourth quarter, anything Ave Maria did, Lawrence Tech had an answer for.

An Armstead layup for AMU was met with two Batey free throws. A Casey Humphrey free throw followed by a Maria Alonso basket was countered by a Kendall Fisher layup and-one.

Armstead's next layup met with more free throws, this time by Addie Nagel.

Ave Maria was just unable to claw at the LTU lead.

Humphrey's triple, the only one for the Gyrenes, were met with free throws by Batey, and shortly thereafter, Nagel.

Evans' layup for LTU brought the lead back up to 18, 69-51.

Three Ave Maria free throws brought it back to 15, as it had been for most of the period, with 1:55 left.

Kendall Fisher knocked down two free throws.

Humphrey makes a layup.

Evans responds with a layup of her own, ending the scoring at 73-56.

The Blue Devil (1-3) return to action on Sunday, November 7 at 3 pm to face Grace College at Don Ridler Fieldhouse.
