Kissimmee, Fla. – The Lawrence Technological University softball team played its first game of its spring break trip on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Devils fell behind 2-0 early before cutting the deficit in half after two innings of play but they weren't able to muster much more offense, falling 6-1.
How It Happened:
- The Wolves had runners on the corner with one out in the top of the first before a sacrifice fly to right field opened the scoring for CSU.
- After a walk, a double down the right field line plated another run in the frame to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead on a pair of unearned runs.
- LTU tried to answer back in the bottom of the frame but left runners on second and third after a foul pop out ended the first inning.
- Grace Roeske worked around a 2-out double in the second before Larissa Mercado started the bottom half with a single to right field.
- Morgan James followed by reaching on an error by the second baseman to give LTU runners on first and second with nobody out
- After a pair of strikeouts, Sarah Hige made sure the Blue Devils didn't waste the opportunity as her RBI single up the middle went off the shortstop's glove to bring Mercado around to cut the margin in half at 2-1.
- CSU responded in the third as they begin the inning with a pair of singles.
- After a productive fly out to right field moved both runners up 60 feet, the Wolves used an RBI groundout to extend their lead back to two, 3-1.
- LTU went down in order in the third before CSU moved a leadoff single to second with a sacrifice bunt which it followed up by bringing her home on a 2-out single to centerfield to make it 4-1 after the top of the fourth.
- The teams traded quick innings until the top of the sixth when the Wolves broke the game open. After starting the inning with a single and a double to put runners on second and third with one out, a wild pitch plated both runners for CSU as it stretched its lead to 6-1.
- LTU wasn't able to capitalize on a leadoff single by Haley Mazon in the sixth while it went 1-2-3 in the seventh to end the game.
Inside the Numbers;
- Roeske started in the circle for LTU, throwing three innings of five-hit ball, allowing three runs (one earned).
- Clover Brandt finished the game from there, pitching four innings while allowing five hits and three earned runs.
- Hige (2-for-4, RBI) and Mercado (2-for-3, R) both had multi-hit games for the Blue Devils in this one.
