LTU Bats Quiet in Pair of Defeats

Kissimmee, Fla. – The Lawrence Technological University softball team dropped its first game of the day on Tuesday afternoon to the University of South Carolina Beaufort 11-1 before losing to #8 Indiana Wesleyan University 12-2 in game two.
Game One vs USC Beaufort

How It Happened:
  • After the Blue Devils went down in order in the top of the first, a leadoff single followed by a pair of wild pitches put the Sandsharks up 1-0 early.
  • USCB would reset the deck with a walk and a single before another wild pitch got both runners in scoring position.
  • With 1-out, an RBI single fell into left center to give the Sand sharks a 2-0 advantage
  • After a pitching change, a hit batter gave USCB runners on first and second but a Clover Brandt strikeout gave LTU a chance to limit the damage.
  • The Sandsharks came up with back-to-back 2-outs singles to pile on three more runs as they held a 5-0 advantage after one inning of play.
  • LTU was unable to capitalize on a throwing error in the second inning before USCB tacked on three more runs via a home run to right field to make it 8-0 after two.
  • The Sandsharks added another run off a 2-out double in the third.
  • In the top of the fifth, USCB once again found 2-out magic as a pair of hits plated two more on its way to an 11-0 victory after 4 ½ innings.
Inside the Numbers;
  • Gloria Su'a got the start in the circle but lasted just 1/3 of an inning, allowing four runs on three hits while walking one.
  • Brandt came on in relief and went the rest of the way (3.2 IP), allowing seven runs on 11 hits while fanning three.
Game Two vs #8 IWU

How It Happened:
  • The Wildcats got on the board first in the top of the second as they started the inning with three straight singles to plate one.
  • In the third, IWU capitalized on a leadoff walk, bringing the runner home on a sacrifice fly to right field before and RBI groundout made it 3-0 heading to the bottom of the third.
  • The Wildcats once again took advantage of a Blue Devils' miscue as a throwing error begin the fourth inning. After a walk and bunt single, a bases loaded walk made it a 4-1 affair.
  • IWU brought three more around in the frame thanks to an RBI groundout and a pair of singles up the middle to extend its lead to seven at 8-1.
  • A 2-out error, tacked on another unearned run for the Wildcats in the fifth.
  • Morgan James started the bottom half of the frame with a walk before being bunted to second by Lily Morrissette. After a wild pitch moved her up 60 feet, Larissa Mercado grounded out to second to make it 9-2 IWU after five.
  • Following a scoreless sixth inning, the Wildcats padded their lead with three more runs in the seventh on their way to a 12-2 victory.
Inside the Numbers;
  • Grace Schriber got the start, hurling two innings of three-hit ball, giving up one run.
  • Roeske pitched the third, surrendering six runs (four earned), on two hits while walking three
  • Brandt threw the next three frames, allowing five runs (four earned) off seven hits
  • The 1-2-3 hitters for LTU (Sarah Hige, Mercado, and Callie Tatum) combined to go 3-for-9 with a walk, 2 RBIs, 1 R
