Women's Basketball Drops Opener to Host Trojans at Taylor University Classic

Dominique Evans led the Blue Devils with 14 points and seven rebounds

UPLAND, Ind.--The Lawrence Tech women's basketball team couldn't overcome the turnover bug nor could the Blue Devils get to the free throw line like their opponent as host Taylor claimed a 65-53 non-conference win in the opening game of the Taylor University Classic on Tuesday at Odle Arena. The Blue Devils fall to 3-7 on the season, while the Trojans improve to 5-7 overall.

Lawrence Tech Highlights
  • Senior Dominique Evans scored a team-high 14 points on 6-for-9 field goal shooting and grabbed seven rebounds.
  • Junior Maggie Long added 11 points on three 3-pointers and she had six rebounds.
  • Sophomore Kate Jacobs (6 points) had a team-best eight rebounds and two blocked shots.
  • Senior Addie Nagel dished a game-high-tying four assists.
Taylor Highlights
  • Ava Henson was the lone Trojan in double-figures with a game-high 17 points. She also had six rebounds and three assists.
  • Hope Custer (9 points) posted game highs of nine rebounds and four assists.
  • Taylor Westgate (8 points) chipped in a game-best three blocks, eight rebounds and two steals.
How it Happened
  • The Trojans scored 19 points off 17 LTU turnovers and outshot the Blue Devils at the free throw line, 12-of-16 to 3-for-4.
  • Taylor led by as many as 18 points in the fourth quarter before LTU got it down to a 12-point deficit at the end.
  • Lawrence Tech had its largest lead of 8-4 after a layin by Long midway through the first quarter.
  • Sophomore Gracie Bobo's (6 points) 3ball with 2 minutes and 37 second left gave LTU its last lead of the game, 13-12, before Henson's layup on the ensuing possession put TU back in front for good.
  • The Trojans led 18-16 at the end of the first quarter and 29-24 at halftime.
  • In the third quarter, the Blue Devils cut the deficit to three points on a couple occasions, 37-34 at 3:48 and 39-36 at 1:44, before the Trojans ended the frame on a 7-0 run to go up by 10, 46-36.
  • Taylor maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the fourth quarter to keep LTU at bay.
Beyond the Boxscore
  • Senior Jade Faris (8 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists tonight) is the reigning Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
  • Lawrence Tech has allowed just one opponent (Indiana Tech) this season to shoot 50 percent or better from the field.
  • The Blue Devils are third in both WHAC field goal (.371) and three-point (.268) percentage defense.
  • Despite going an uncharacteristic 2-for-11 from the arc today, Bobo still leads the conference with a solid 45.2 3-point clip.
Up Next
  • The Blue Devils will stay in Upland on Wednesday to conclude the Taylor University Classic against Cumberland (Tenn.) at 4 p.m.
