CHICAGO, Ill. - Nicole Propst (SO/Warren, MI) led Lawrence Tech women's soccer team with two goals as the Blue Devils opened the 2014 season with a 3-1 victory over Roosevelt University (Ill.) at Toyota Park on Saturday afternoon.
Lawrence Tech (1-0) fell behind early as Roosevelt capitalized on a turnover inside the Blue Devils 18-yard box. The Lakers Mika Reid found the net as her shot slipped in under the cross bar to give Roosevelt an early 1-0 lead.
The Blue Devils responded in the 25th minute when Propst scored her first goal of the season after a pass from Claire Huddas (JR/Canton, MI) to tie the game at 1-1. The score would stay tied as the teams entered halftime.
Heather Derstine (SO/Midland, MI) started in net for Lawrence Tech and made three saves while allowing a goal in the first half. Derstine's counterpart, Sydney Hebel saw one shot - the lone goal for the Blue Devils in the first half. Each team had a corner kick while total shots were 8-4 in favor of Roosevelt.
The Blue Devils took a 2-1 lead late in the second half when Propst took a long pass from Alexandra Bryden (JR/Canton, MI) and dribbled down the right side for the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute. Huddas made it 3-1 seven minutes later as she capitalized on a Lakers turnover and chipped it over Hebel to seal the Blue Devils third-straight season opening victory.
Lawrence Tech finished the game with 10 shots - four on goal - while the Lakers had 14 shots with eight on goal. Derstine finished the game with seven saves while allowing only one goal in tonight's win. Propst finished with four shots - three on goal - and two goals. Huddas had two shots on net with a goal and an assist.
Hebel made one save while allowing three goals for Roosevelt as she took the loss in the season opener. Jamie Beniac and Reid both finished with three shots while Reid scored the lone goal for the Lakers. Julia Schultz added two shots on goal.
The Blue Devils return to the pitch on Sunday, August 17 at Holy Cross College (Ind.) starting at 4 pm.
