ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological University (LTU) men's soccer time set an LTU program record for most goals in a game as they defeated Concordia University - Ann Arbor (Mich.) 10-0 in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Saturday afternoon.
Lawrence Tech (8-7-1, 4-4-1 WHAC) broke five program records in the 10-0 win including most shots in a game with 36 shots, most shots on goal in a game with 21, most goals in a game with 10, and most goals in a half with seven.
Four different Blue Devils scored double-digit goals, most players to score multiple goals in a game in program history.
Lawrence Tech took a three goal lead nine minutes into the game as Zack Whatcott (SR/Lapeer, MI) gave LTU a 1-0 lead in the second minute. Two minutes later, Matt Gibiec (SO/Saint Joseph, MI) made it 2-0 with an assist from Justin Pilarski (SR/Royal Oak, MI). Kevin Wright (FR/Linden, Mich.) gave Lawrence Tech a 3-0 lead in the ninth minute.
LTU outshot the Cardinals 21-1 and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks at halftime.
In the second half, Lawrence Tech continued to score as Whatcott made it 4-0 in the 49th minute. Gibiec notched his second of the game a minute later to give LTU a 5-0 lead. Wright gave LTU a 6-0 lead in the 57th minute.
Derek Butcher (JR/DeWitt, MI) made it 8-0 following two goals in the six minutes. Butcher scored his first in the 75th minute on an assist from Mateus Meira (JR/Rio de Janiero, Brazil). In the 81st minute, Butcher scored off an Alek Nestorovski (FR/Shelby Twp., Mich.) pass. Six minutes later, Nestorovski made it 9-0 burying a Bart Kowalewski (SR/Washington Twp.) pass into the back of the net.
Landon Chamberlain (FR/Ada, Mich.) gave LTU a 10-0 lead in the 89th minute, securing Lawrence Tech's largest shutout in program history.
Joey Knoff (SR/Midland, MI) played 75 minutes in net making one save, with Jacob Allen (FR/Cumming, Ga.) adding a save in the final 15 minutes of play. Wright and Whatcott finished the game with four shots on goal and two goals apiece, while Nestorovski added three shots, a goal, and an assist. Tyler Winningham (JR/Canton, MI) added two shots on goal, with Gibiec adding two goals on two shots.
Lawrence Tech is back on the pitch at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28 at 1 p.m. when they welcome University of Michigan - Dearborn to LTU Athletic Fields on Senior Day.
