GOSHEN, Ind. - After a 17 day layoff, the Lawrence Technological University (LTU) women's soccer team returned to the pitch with a 2-1 comeback win against Goshen College (Ind.) at the Goshen Classic. It was the programs first win against the Maple Leafs, they were 0-2 against them prior to today's win. Alexandra Bryden (SR/Canton, MI) scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute to give LTU a great start to the weekend.
Lawrence Tech (2-1) fell behind in the 67th minute as Melia Watkins was able to lob it over the goalkeeper to take a 1-0 lead. The Blue Devils tried to quickly respond, but Celeste Scott (JR/Dryden, MI)'s shot went wide of the net. Katelyn Watson (SR/Canton, MI) almost tied it at 1-1 in the 72nd minute, but Maple Leafs goalkeeper, Natalie Thorne made the save to preserve the 1-0 lead.
As the Maple Leafs were looking to push the ball forward, Claire Huddas (SR/Canton, MI) capitalized on a Goshen giveaway, connecting with the ball from 30 yards out. Huddas' goal tied the game at 1-1 in the 76th minute.
Goshen had a chance to retake the lead in the 77th minute, but the shot was blocked by Lawrence Tech. A minute later, Ginyce Haywood had an opportunity to make it 2-1, but her shot went over the net.
Lawrence Tech was looking for the game-winner in the waning minutes as Lisa Zaffina (SR/Waterford, MI)'s shot in the 82nd minute was saved by Thorne. Minutes later, Alexandra Bryden's shot from distance found the back of the net to give LTU a 2-1 lead with five minutes left in the game.
Derstine made one save in the final three minutes as LTU was able to hold off Goshen for the 2-1 win.
Bryden finished the game with two shots on goal, while Huddas added one goal on three shots. Derstine finished the game with two saves on three shots.
Lawrence Tech returns to action on Saturday, September 12, at 12 p.m. as the face University of Saint Francis (Ind.) at Goshen as part of the four team Goshen Classic.
