ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Lawrence Technological University (LTU) women's volleyball team fell in the 2015 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) season opener, 3-1 to Concordia University - Ann Arbor (Mich.) (CUAA) on Wednesday evening.
Lawrence Tech (3-7, 0-1 WHAC) dropped the first two sets (27-25, 25-20) while taking set three 27-25. Concordia sealed the win with a 25-20 fourth set win. LTU was led by Mary Armstrong, who finished the match with a game high 26 kills. Josie Queary led all players in assists with 41, while Lexi Szymoniak tallied 18 digs.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set, following two Briana Reum service aces and an Armstrong kill. Concordia battled back to tie the set at 4-4. The set continued to go back-and-forth as the Cardinals took a 16-11 lead. LTU fought back to tie it at 20-20, scoring 10 of the next 13 points in the set. Armstrong had four kills during that stretch, with Queary adding five of her 41 assists.
Lawrence Tech took the lead at 21-20 on a kill by Reum and extended it to 22-20 after a Jessica Frakes kill. However, CUAA finished the set taking seven of the last 10 points for a 27-25 set win.
In set two, the Blue Devils went up 12-9 following a 7-2 run, led by Szymoniak with two kills. Concordia countered that attack, taking a 15-14 lead following two LTU ball handling errors. The teams would tie six more times before Concordia sealed the set with five straight points, 25-20.
Lawrence Tech opened the third set with a 7-4 lead. Alisha Stidam had one kill, while Armstrong tallied four during that run. Concordia (7-3, 1-0 WHAC) took a 15-13 lead before LTU went on a 7-1 run, giving the Blue Devils a 20-16 lead. The Cardinals retook the lead at 23-21, but LTU grabbed six of the last eight points to win the set 27-25.
Lawrence Tech started the fourth set with a 14-5 lead following five LTU kills and two blocks. Concordia would strike back with a 12-1 run, taking a 17-15 lead. The Cardinals closed out the match with a 25-20 set win.
Autumn VanKirk led the Cardinals with 13 kills, while Claire Truskowski notched 27 assists. Julia Szuba recorded 26 digs in the win.
Lawrence Tech closes out the opening season road trip with a stop in Pittsburgh, Pa. for the Battle of the Boulevards Tournament starting Friday, September 4 at 10 a.m. The Blue Devils open the tournament by facing West Liberty State, followed by (RV) Taylor University (Ind.) at 2 p.m. On Saturday, September 5, LTU opens with (RV) Point Park University (Pa.) at 8 a.m. and Indiana University - East at 10 a.m.
